Don’t miss Chappaquiddick!

The movie Chappaquiddick exceeded my very high expectations. Not only is it a truthful exploration of the events that led up the death of May Jo Kopechne  and the criminal cover-up of Ted Kennedy’s culpability therein, it goes deep into the character of the man, and how he got to the depraved state of indifference to the life of a young woman who had devoted herself to “the cause” of the Kennedy family.

The process of the cover-up is laid out in fascinating detail, revealing the ruthlessness of the Kennedy family coterie of high powered advisors, especially Ted Sorenson and Robert McNamara. I could not help but reflect on the resonance with the deep state issues of today  of the way that laws and procedures and professional responsibilities of the government officials dealing with the car wreck and the corpse meant nothing to them in the face of “the cause” of protecting the Kennedys. The local, state, and federal officials we see are a kind of Kennedy Deep State that had absolute control over the handling of the matter.

TV special glosses over the truth behind JFK Jr.’s doomed flight

“The Last Days of JFK Jr.,” a two-hour special promising new details and new interviews under the ABC News banner.

Not only did the program soft-pedal Kennedy’s complete and utter fault for the crash but it got crucial details wrong — claiming that the FAA said flying conditions that night were “excellent” (according to the National Transportation Safety Board review of the crash, they were extremely poor, and JFK Jr. would have known it), and that his flight instructor was unavailable that night to fly with him. In fact, the NTSB report said one of Kennedy’s instructors did offer to fly with him, but Kennedy said no, that “he wanted to do it alone.”

After two years of intense legal wrangling, the Kennedy clan paid the family of Carolyn and Lauren Bessette $15 million for their deaths in the crash of the plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Jr.,

The crash of the plane in which the three were traveling to Martha’s Vineyard was officially attributed to pilot error. It was found that John didn’t have enough flying experience for the poor weather conditions the evening of the flight.

According to the Enquirer, Freeman was prepared to file a wrongful death suit seeking more than $20 million unless she got her apology. The Kennedys maintained they had expressed their grief over and over and there was nothing to be gained by issuing a meaculpa.
