Some lessons from the stories in the article:
1) first off, folks really dont really have enough in savings
2) the catastophries happen when folks over extend in terms of home or lifestyle
3) regarding savings- do you really need to eat out that often ? Buy that expensive vacation each year ? Have so many tvs, ipads, electronics, cell phone plans ? Spending WaY too much on cars. Personally ive continually saved every year, and built cash savings, not just investments,to several hundred thousand dollars. All by doing very simple things. Recessions dont exist for me, and unemployment doesnt scare me. Im actually far more employable, and reliable bc of it. Im relaxed, and confident, and customers see that, and employers are attracted by it. I offer my services of sales to the highest bidder. Every company needs top line revenue growth. I deliver that in spades, no matter the product, no matter the economy. Can i still become unemployed ? Sure. But its highly unlikely ill lose my house, or suffer the indignity these people suffer from as noted by the article. Self sufficiency is not an art form, or hope, or illusion. It comes from a plan, built over time. Americans are learning this the hard way.
4) keep your network, and stay local. This one guy moved from his network, and took a major risk by moving across country, then not being able to sell his house, trying to then rent, and losing his network of friends and families. Worse it appears he didnt have much savings. Dont get suckered by corporations like this, and let them destroy your network. Unless you have a huge go to hell fund, and are willing to re- develop your entire network, think hard and think 3 times before moving. People undervalue, and underestimate their local network of friends and family. Mobility in america has mostly been good for realtors, home builders, and banks. Building roots and staying firmly planted has life long benefits, and its many times far far cheaper.
