Carlos Slim: at it again?

Shares in Telekom Austria jumped by nearly 10 per cent in Vienna on Tuesday after a local news magazine said Carlos Slim, the Mexican telecoms tycoon, had taken a 4.1 per cent stake in the company, Reuters reports.
This would be far from the first time Slim has snapped up a cheap asset in distressed Europe. He made a similar move on KPN of the Netherlands last month and followed it up the next day by taking control of Simple Mobile of the US.
The Austrian deal has yet to be confirmed. But it bears all the hallmarks of a typical Slim deal: buy cheap, build organically. That’s what he did in Latin America, where América Móvil has operations in 17 countries plus the US.
