Well, to employ another cliche that has overtones of its own, the chicken has come home to roost.We are going to have to take these matters seriously from now on because what happened in Boston is arguably scarier than September 11, 2001, not in its headcount, obviously, but in its implications.

The attack on the World Trade Center may have been a one-off. Hijacking 747s is not easy to do, less so now. But blowing up folks at an event, or even a non-event like an average day at an average shopping mall, is much simpler and vastly more difficult to defend in a country the size of the USA. Even two or three incidents would change the character of our daily lives forever and lay waste to our already precarious economy, probably take the world economy along with it.

Is this going to happen? That depends on what’s hiding out there in our fair land. Who knows how many Tamerlans and Dzhokhars lurk in the cities and suburbs of our country, waiting to explode? Not the FBI, evidently. And I doubt anybody else.

Meanwhile, we have the worst possible president to deal with the situation. And even after an event as heinous as Boston, he is supported by a media desperate to preserve his narrative at all costs. It’s already started. On Saturday the Boston Globe published an article titled — I kid you not — “Islam might have a secondary role in Boston attacks.” (Don’t look for what might have the primary role. You won’t find it.) That stupefying essay is a harbinger of what’s to come as soon as the atmosphere dies down, perhaps as soon as next week.

Keep the truth alive. And your eyes open. Your life — or that of someone you love — may depend on it.

One of the things that makes America the greatest nation on Earth . . . is that we welcome people from all around the world — people of every faith, every ethnicity, from every corner of the globe. So as we continue to learn more about why and how this tragedy happened, let’s make sure that we sustain that spirit.”

My immediate reaction was loud and unprintable. Reading the transcript in the light of day didn’t help. put it kindly, the president is stuck in deep denial. Shadow-boxing against the truth, he can’t bring himself to say “Muslim terrorists.”

That simple truth, obvious and balanced, is embraced by the overwhelming majority of Americans. By denying it, Obama insults them and discredits himself.

I have a gut feeling that the older guy felt they didn't fit in in the USA and turned his brother. If they were born here they might have gotten into drugs and dropped out or shot up a school and we would be talking about gun control again.

Instead one of them went to Chechnya and learned how to make bombs.

Did take a look at the Boston Globe piece however. Here's a paragraph from that about videos apparently posted by the alleged bombers: "But even with that page, a mixed picture emerges. There are a number of videos of Feiz Mohammed, a controversial Australian fundamentalist sheik and, like Tsarnaev, a former boxer, who has drawn criticism for suggesting that women are responsible for their own rape and calling for the radicalization of children." Women are responsible for their own rape? These Islamic radicals are beginning to sound like Republicans. Amazing they would go that far.

The quote you have from President Obama is quite inspiring. Pity, he has to keep reminding Americans in this day and age what America, the great nation of immigrants, is truly about.

By the way, you keep writing "president". What grade school did you go to? It's only proper and respectful whenever referring to a specific president as you are to capitalize the "P" in President. Only the enemies of America, like these Islamic radicals, go out of their way to not capitalize the President of the United States. They want to disrespect the President and the country he represents. War cyles suggest abt 2014 the US enters another major war.

If that makes anyone happy, then wonderful.

The government is more interested in playing political games than protecting you.

the FBI’s failure to look carefully and long enough at Tamerlan-the-terrorist has a lot to do with our leaders’ reluctance to call a terrorist a terrorist or to accept the fact that radical Islamist terrorists exist. The people who do counterterrorism shy away from seeing such terrorists, or potential terrorists, because if they point to such people, several bad things (from the investigators’ and analysts’ standpoint) happen. First, the policy makers aren’t going to do anything; second, the investigators and analysts aren’t going to get promoted, or rewarded with bonuses; third, they may get sued or sent to the bureaucratic equivalent of Siberia.

Yes, terrorists always score resounding victories on the cheap because we Americans are...uh, a bunch of pussies. One guy tries to smuggle explosives in his shoes and now all American airline passengers have to take off their shoes? When the Bush babies instituted the massively inane Department of Homeland Security we took a big step down the road to losing the economic war on terrorism, and Boston proves we are still on that path (the Obama administration has at least gotten rid of those idiotic color-coded terrorist alerts so there has been a bit of sanity restored).

As to your points:

Lesson No. 1: Should never happen. The lock down of Boston was worse than the bombing and hindered finding the suspects, to say nothing of the fact it was unconstitutional.

Lesson No. 2: Terrorism can come from any a disgruntled group or individual -- just ask Timothy McVeigh. When the bombs went off on Tax day in Boston my first suspicion was that it was going to be some right-wing tea party wacko protesting his taxes. A modern-day terrorist tea party on April 15th in Boston -- that would have been truly symbolic.

Lesson No. 3: Our immigration system needs reform, sure, but it still the source of the nation's greatest strength -- and we're going to need millions of immigrates to replace the baby boomers in the coming decades or the great American experiment will be toast.

Lesson No. 4: "The more open a society, the more targets it presents" -- true, and the greater it is.
