'Big chill' expected to stay until 2040

Dr. Tim Ball taught climatology for many years at the University of Winnipeg and is the author of the newly released book, “The Deliberate Corruption of Climate Science.”

“What happens as the cooling begins, the jet stream moves from west to east in very large waves, but the amplitude, that is the north-south orientation of those waves, increases. It’s called a meridional pattern of weather, and that’s why you see
the record colds that you had in the U.S. recently, but also record warms,” Ball explained.

“Look at eastern Australia as an example, or Siberia earlier in the winter. So if you imagine these waves where you’ve got cold air pushing toward the equator in one area, you’ve also got warmer air pushing further toward the poles in other areas.
That’s why you’ve got this increasing variability of the weather,” said Ball, who noted that history tells us exactly what these conditions mean.

“If you look at the historic record, and I mean going over 10,000 years, this pattern occurs as the earth starts its cooling down process. And that’s what’s going to happen,” he said. “We’re going to be in this cooling until at least 2040.”

Eleven signs of cooling. A new little Ice Age coming?

#1. It all depends on the sun. The sunspots and its accompanied solar activity goes in cycles. When there are lots of sunspots the sun is more active than when there are few. We are now at a solar maximum and this is the lowest maximum in over a hundred years and less than half of the most recent solar cycles. The next solar cycle is projected to be almost nonexistent. The last time this happened was during the little ice age.

#2. A new record time for no major hurricanes hitting the U.S. mainland is set every day.

#3. The number of tornadoes are close to a historic low.

#4. The arctic temperature over 80 degree latitude was below average every day since from May through August in 2013. This was unprecedented since measurements started. This pattern is repeated in 2014.

#5 Arctic ice content for 2013 was at a 6 year high. Ice is a lagging indicator. If the ice is increasing, temperature has been decreasing for some time. This year will have a higher minimum since there is much more multi-year ice northwest of Greenland.

#6. Arctic melt is larger than the 30 year average, but that is due to soot from China, not higher temperatures.

#7. Last two years the Antarctic ice cover hit consecutive record highs since measurements started.

#8. Antarctic ice is running well above average, setting another record in 2013, and is on its way for another record in 2014. The picture above shows we are setting a new all time record for ice anomaly with more than 2 million square kilometer ice than normal for this time of the year. This ice is around the 60th latitude which means the change in albedo from ocean to ice is highly cooling leading to even more ice growth.

#9. The continental U.S. temperature records are misleading. Many weather stations are located near airport runways. This is a proper location to give runway information to the pilots but is not well suited for climatological reporting since they report the airport runway microclimate, not true overall conditions. This tends to skew temperature data. If airport data is taken out of the reporting, temperatures now are well below the records set mostly in the early 1900’s. A snapshot from the last week of July:

#11. Sandy. Contrary to popular reporting of the unprecedented storm surge during hurricane Sandy there has been two hurricanes with higher storm surges. They both occurred in the 1600’s, during the little ice age and can be explained by a late hurricane coming up the East coast being drawn inland by an early outbreak of cold arctic air.

Like the Dalton Minimum and Spörer Minimum, the Maunder Minimum coincided with a period of lower-than-average European temperatures.

There are many books written about the relationship between Solar Cycle Grand Minimums and temperatures. One prevailing theory is you get a .7C degree temperature drop at the Canadian border for every extra year a solar cycle lasts (temperature drop occurring over the next solar cycle.)

Solar cycles last 9-15 years with an average of 11 years. Solar cycle 23 lasted 14 years (1994-2008) which equates to a 2-3C drop at the Canadian border over SC24 (2008-2023). SC 24 looks to be a weak long cycle and SC25 looks to be weaker still. If this theory holds, the corn belt will move 400 miles south.

Canada would be reduced to a frozen wasteland instead of the number 6 wheat producer and number 1 rapeseed producer. Anyone interested in researching this further can google David Archibald or breadandbutterscience.com. As the atlantic ocean cycle (AMO) goes into cold phase, the Triple Crown of Cooling will be in place. Weak sun, cold ocean cycles and extra volcanism.

This weather pattern would shut down Canada and Northern Europe farming due to cold. It also desiccates California for century long droughts and desiccates most of South America. Both Brazil and California are in historic droughts and if they continue, food will become an issue.

Something is screwy with the sun color, pure white, eyes cant stand to see it, wasnt it mellow yellow? yet by skin doesnt feel the same warming sensation from such light. I saw good size fireball yesterday, burned green, copper. I heard next week is a chance of flares, nasty solar storm turning forward.

But wait, this one comes with a lump of cherry-picked partial info as well. A two-fer!

Anyone notice that little bit of jet stream on the left reaching up into Alaska? Any one familiar with global map projections would know that 'little bit' is at least as big as the jet stream dropping down into the US.

Now what could making the jet stream extend into arctic air and pull down a lump into the Lower 48? Hmm.

Severe storm in Alaska will whip cold weather to East Coast

(CNN) -- A strong storm over the Bering Sea -- the remnants of Super Typhoon Nuri -- will bring intense winds, massive waves and heavy rain and snow to coastal Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.
But don't ignore it just because it is a sparsely populated area with residents who are accustomed to severe weather. The powerful storm will whip the jet stream, causing a ripple effect that will carry the cold air to the East Coast.

This arctic outbreak will funnel down through Canada over the next week, bringing a deep freeze to the eastern United States, with temperatures forecast 20 degrees below average.

The ripple of frigid air starts in Alaska, where the remnants of Super Typhoon Nuri -- which earlier in the week was tied for the strongest storm typhoon of the year based on wind speed -- have strengthened, though it isn't a typhoon any longer.

Technically, it's called a mid-latitude storm.

The storm carries the energy of the typhoon and its current strength is derived from clashes of hot and cold air. This incredibly strong cyclone will alter the jet stream allowing for the cold air to plunge into the United States next week.
The effects of the cold air will be felt as early as the weekend, as temperatures will cool in the East Coast. But a second cold front with really cold air will make its way into the Upper Midwest Sunday and the East Coast by the end of next week.
That second front will bring snow from Montana to the Great Lakes starting on Sunday. By Wednesday, snow may reach as far north as New England.

The name "Polar Vortex" has been attached in the past to weather like this, but that is a misnomer.
There is a thing called the Polar Vortex, and it is always present in the arctic atmosphere. The current storm is affecting the jet stream and allowing polar air to plunge farther south, but it is not a direct result of the Polar Vortex.

So, for the ignorant, a typhoon is a hurricane that is formed in the Pacific rather than the Atlantic. And just like hurricanes, it is caused by exceedingly warm tropical temperatures. What is unusual about Nuri is not only its size but that after losing typhoon status it regained wind speeds after moving into the usually cool latitudes, enough so to disrupt the polar air mass and cause the jet stream to pull a lump down into the Lower 48.

Now for you math geniuses, what do you think happens to the average temperature of the polar air when it is invaded by huge and warm former typhoon air mass AND some of that polar air is shifted south over land much warmer than the poles? Maybe take a break for a couple of hours on this one to give your brains a rest before trying to think this one through.

It's pretty amazing what one can learn when they are not close-minded and living in an echo chamber. You all might want to try it some time.
