Judy Garland's daughter talks about drug addiction and celebrity

Was another celebrity killed by an enabler who happened to be a physician?

I lost my mother, legend Judy Garland, on June 22 1969 to an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. She was only 47 years old. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was only 16

And yes, my mother was addicted to prescription drugs. I spent my early adolescent years filling her prescription medications with sugar so she wouldn’t overdose.

But what has saddened, disturbed, angered and frustrated me in the last 40 years is still the unethical and irresponsible way that many doctors in the medical field continue to over-prescribe drugs to celebrities and the rich and famous. It seems that we haven’t learned anything over the past 4 decades.

The countless stories I hear of being able to walk into certain doctors’ offices and walk out with a shopping cart full of prescription drugs is endless. We have all heard the stories of the various “Dr Feelgoods” in the 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and now. Also, we hear countless references to drugs in rhythm and blues and rock n roll lyrics. We have also heard the phrases “Mother’s Little Helpers” for decades.

Elvis Presley Died at Age 42

"Drug use was heavily implicated" in Presley's death, writes Guralnick. "No one ruled out the possibility of anaphylactic shock brought on by the codeine pills ... to which he was known to have had a mild allergy." A pair of lab reports filed two months later each strongly suggested that polypharmacy was the primary cause of death; one reported "fourteen drugs in Elvis' system, ten in significant quantity."[318] Forensic historian and pathologist Michael Baden views the situation as complicated: "Elvis had had an enlarged heart for a long time. That, together with his drug habit, caused his death. But he was difficult to diagnose; it was a judgment call."[319]

The competence and ethics of two of the centrally involved medical professionals were seriously questioned. Before the autopsy was complete and toxicology results known, medical examiner Dr. Jerry Francisco declared the cause of death as cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that can be determined only in someone who is still alive.[320] Allegations of a cover-up were widespread.[319] While Presley's main physician, Dr. Nichopoulos, was exonerated of criminal liability for the singer's death, the facts were startling: "In the first eight months of 1977 alone, he had [prescribed] more than 10,000 doses of sedatives, amphetamines and narcotics: all in Elvis's name." His license was suspended for three months. It was permanently revoked in the 1990s after the Tennessee Medical Board brought new charges of over-prescription.[229]

Amidst mounting pressure in 1994, the Presley autopsy was reopened. Coroner Dr. Joseph Davis declared, "There is nothing in any of the data that supports a death from drugs. In fact, everything points to a sudden, violent heart attack."[229] Whether or not combined drug intoxication was in fact the cause, there is little doubt that polypharmacy contributed significantly to Presley's premature death.[320]

Eminem

Eminem has spoken about his addiction to prescription drugs, including Vicodin, Ambien, and Valium.

Eminem began taking the drugs to "feel normal," which involved taking a "ridiculous amount […] I could consume anywhere from 40 to 60 Valium [in a day]. Vicodin maybe 30." Essentially, the drugs never allowed Eminem to sleep for more than two hours a night, after which he'd only take more.

Eminem's struggle with prescription drugs peaked in a December 2007 overdose on methadone.

Michael Jackson

Deepak Chopra, an internist, endocrinologist, and speaker about mind–body intervention who was a friend of Jackson, criticized what he saw as "enabling" by some Hollywood doctors: "This cult of drug-pushing doctors, with their co-dependent relationships with addicted celebrities, must be stopped.

The Los Angeles Times wrote that the DEA was focusing on at least five doctors who prescribed drugs to Jackson, trying to determine whether they had had a "face to face" relationship with him, and whether they had made legally required diagnoses. Fox News Channel published a list of nine doctors who they said were under investigation. The Sunday Times wrote that the police wanted to question 30 doctors, nurses, and pharmacists

Arrested at his Covina residence Wednesday afternoon, San Gabriel Valley physician Dr. Daniel Cham faces a 31-count indictment that alleges the doctor illegally distributed drugs including potent, addictive narcotic painkillers and muscle relaxers to the tune of over 42,000 illegal prescriptions and then laundered the proceeds.

When Bill Cosby wanted Quaaludes, he turned to a friendly gynecologist, Leroy Amar

There are countless tales of celebrities, music stars, and wealthy socialites in the 1970’s willingly using Quaaludes for recreational purposes and during consensual sex

When Bill Cosby needed Quaaludes to give to women he hoped to have sex with, he knew a doctor to turn to: Leroy Amar, a Hollywood prescriber of the pills that became a popular recreational drug among celebrities and other glitzy party people in the 1970s.

Quaaludes were called “disco biscuits” in those days and known to induce disorientation and euphoria.

“I would not doubt in a minute that Amar would sign a prescription to give anybody anything they wanted. That’s just the way he was,” said Meldon S. Hollis Jr., a former Washington-area lawyer who once represented the physician and later blamed him for the loss of his law license. “He was unscrupulous.”

Amar, who also practiced plastic surgery — badly — died in 2002 at age 71.
