The Moon is the TRIGGER, NOT THE CAUSE.

Seismologists at the University of Tokyo examined three seismic events. These include the 2004 Sumatra quake with a magnitude of 9.3, the 2010 Maule quake in Chile with a magnitude of 8.8, and the 2011 Fukushima quake with a magnitude of 9.0.

The geologists found an overlap between these events and periods of high tidal stress, along with the alignment of the Sun and Moon which yields the strongest gravitational tug on Earth. In addition, the 2011 Japan quake and the 2004 Sumatra quake occurred during a high tide. Based on further research and examination, nine of the 12 biggest earthquakes recorded had occurred on days with a new or full moon.

"This sort of tidal triggering could teach us something pretty fundamental about how earthquakes start, grow, and ultimately run their course," stated the authors of the study.

Earthquakes triggered by Sun and Moon Started by Rogerdodger, 18 Jul 2016

Some earthquakes on San Andreas Fault triggered by gravitational tug of sun and moon...

"This phenomenon has fascinated scientists for years. Like sea levels, the surface of the Earth also goes up and down with the tides, flexing the crust and stressing the faults inside. Further study found that during certain phases of the tidal cycle, small tremors deep underground – known as low-frequency earthquakes – were more likely to occur."

On the morning of December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake caused the Tsunami which struck Sumatra, killing 300,000.

It was during a full moon.

5.0 tonight in Cushing OK.  That's where the Chicago Exchange oil is delivered.

Cushing oil hub faces emerging threat: Earthquakes

No reported pipeline problems so far tonight.

All power to the town is cut off as a precaution.

Even though it is home to fewer than 10,000 people, Cushing is the largest commercial oil storage hub in North America, second only in size to the U.S. government's Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The small town's giant tanks, some big enough to fit a Boeing 747 jet inside, were filled with around 10 million barrels of crude at the time, an obvious target for someone looking to disrupt America's economy and energy supply.

Earthquake on the verge of tomorrow's "Super Moon" (That's when the Full Moon is closest to the earth, next one in 30 years):

REUTERS: Tsunami hits New Zealand after series of strong quakes...
MAP: 7.8 MAG...
PAPER: Chaos in Christchurch...
AFP: MASSIVE...

WELLINGTON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck central New Zealand just after midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey said, causing widespread damage and generating a tsunami.

The quake brought back memories of a magnitude-6.3 earthquake that struck the city in 2011, destroying much of the downtown area and killing 185 people in one of New Zealand's worst disasters...3 days following the Full moon.

Another big one today on the verge of tomorrow's "Super Moon".

6.2-magnitude quake shakes northwestern Argentina...

Perihelion for earth occurs the first week in January . The word is derived from the Greek words for "near" (peri) and "Sun" (helios).

In the early 1600s, German mathematician/astronomer Johannes Kepler developed his Three Laws of Planetary Motion.  He showed that as planets orbit the Sun, they actually move in ellipses, not perfect circles as was previously thought from the times of the ancient Greeks.  This means that planets are sometimes closer to the Sun (perihelion as mentioned above) and sometimes further from the Sun (called aphelion).  Therefore, when we talk about the distance of a planet from the Sun, we have to specify the average distance.

The values for perihelion and aphelion are 91,402,640 mi and 94,509,460 mi respectively.

Plate tectonics

the Earth's strong outer layer (called the lithosphere, which consists of crust and uppermost mantle) is broken into a mosaic of plates that slowly move over a mechanically weaker layer (the asthenosphere, which is part of the upper mantle). Where these plates interact, major geological processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

The catastrophic displacement of fault along plate boundaries is the origin of large earthquakes. Consider bending a wooden pencil until it snaps. The ability to bend is an elastic property of the material, and when it snaps you have exceeded its elastic limit. The same applies to geological materials.

Rocks are able to accumulate a small amount of elastic energy, what we call elastic limit.  When processes exceed this energy, the rock breaks, like bending the pencil.  In the case of preexisting faults, the elastic limit of rock is even less, and displacement will occur with relative ease.

These fault displacements can be gradual or intermittent.  In the former case we speak of a seismic slip, while in the latter case the displacement is seismic. The moment of seismic slip, when the elastic limits is exceeded, is the origin of an earthquake
