hiker, As I'm sure you know, individual disposition is a major factor in altitude sickness. The two most important things to remember are to (1) acclimate slowly, and (2) be prepared to descend if one does not acclimate. In cases of people who are highly susceptible to altitude sickness, it can be life-threatening and the only cure is immediate descent. So please let your family member know to be very careful, especially the first day or two, until she's sure her body is adjusting. I've heard it said that its preferable to sleep at a lower level than the highest point reached during the daytime.
