Aspartame Industry Looking To Block NM Hearings

SANTA FE - Gov. Bill Richardson doesn't think the federal government is doing enough to protect the public from possible dangers of aspartame.

He said Wednesday that he supports a decision this week by the Environmental Improvement Board to hold hearings next summer on the safety of the sugar substitute, commonly known as Equal or NutraSweet. It is an ingredient in about 6,000 products.

Asked if he is concerned aspartame may be harmful, Richardson answered, "Yes, from what I've learned." Critics of the sweetener have claimed it causes cancers and other health problems, despite the fact that it has been approved as safe in countries around the world.

T. J. Trujillo, Santa Fe attorney for a low calorie products industry group, said Wednesday he and his clients are still exploring whether they have any grounds for an immediate appeal to block the hearing. In the meantime, industry representatives will reach out to New Mexico government officials and policy advisers, he said. "We want to figure out their positions and work for a resolution."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is responsible for determining the safety of food additives, approved aspartame in l981. Richardson said he doesn't want New Mexico to overstep its bounds.

But "I'm not saying we can't do anything about it," he added. Hearings next July might give some idea of what steps New Mexico should and could take, he said.

FDA spokeswoman Kimberly Rawlings said officials there are aware of the New Mexico board's action and are keeping an eye on what happens next.

People interested in banning aspartame from your state you need to check on statutes on poisonous substances and adulteration. I would suspect they are the same in other states and countries. You have a precedent set. Let's get aspartame off this planet. I think its of interest that attorneys for Calorie Control Council, the aspartame industry front group, said they are exploring whether they have grounds for appeal to block the hearing. Since they push this toxin as safe, they should embrace this hearing. What are they afraid of? Perhaps the thousands and thousands of victims who are invited to New Mexico to testify? Or maybe because now Italian researchers who declared malignant brain tumors, lymphoma and leukemia after a three year study have now added kidney cancer among other cancers. They call aspartame a "multipotential carcinogen".

This goes along with what the FDA's own toxicologist, the late Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress. He said aspartame violated the Delaney Amendment which forbid putting anything in food you know will cause cancer because without a shadow of a doubt aspartame can cause brain tumors and brain cancer. However, in original studies it also caused mammary, ovarian, testicular, pancreatic and thyroid tumors, for starters!

As we know, the Governor of California has outlawed pop in schools there. We hope Governor Richardson will now do the same in New Mexico, including any product with aspartame.

FWIW - Am convinced that habitual consumption of aspartame
is more dangerous than people realize. Irony is that it actually contributes to weight gain due to an acid producing affect. There's good evidence that it also damages nerve cells (is a neurotoxin). As well, a component of aspartame (methyl alcohol) converts into formaldehyde in the body and I probably don't need to tell you what that does.

Have some nice formaldahyde soda. Drink up!

So how is it different than the stuff that goes into cars? I understand that certain compounds obviously have to be changed...they don't just pour the stuff in thier drinks etc. or ice cream...

Polyethylene glycol is polymerized ethylene glycol. Dr Pepper reportedly uses it as an antifoaming agent.

Ethylene glycol commonly called antifreeze (HO-CH2-CH2-HO) is a small toxic compound which dissolves readily in water and lowers its freezing point.

Polyethylene glycol (HO-CH2CH2-0-CH2CH2-0-CH2CH2-0-) is a very large inert, gelantinous compound which can be used to thicken foods. It's completely non-toxic and probably indigestable.

Chemical compounds can dramatically change with the addition of one atom. Above you gave the chemical description of ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol. Any chemist will tell you the difference (I'm not one). The fact is that they are very different. One is huge (polyethylene glycol is huge relative ethylene glycol...check a diagram out on the web). As a result, they have very different physical and reactive characteristics. Add just one atom and you can change a lot. Add lots and you've got even more difference. Like table salt is NaCl but poisonous Chlorine gas just Cl. Or Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2, but water is H2O. Or how two Hydrogens with an Oxigen is fine, but Hydrogen with Chlorine makes for Hydrochloric acid HCl.

The jist was that just because they sound similar doesn't mean that they are similar. If you're going to accuse a company of poisoning people, you'd do well to make sure you know what you're talking about, no?

I mean, how would you feel if somone who didn't know spit about what you do accused you of killing people or harming them in some insidious fashion? Wouldn't you think that they'd owe you at least a little bit of due dilligence?

There's a ton of food and health hooey out there. There's also plenty of credible and reasonably credible research out there on the web. Spreading an urban myth that has no science behind it whatsoever is just irresponsible. Just put yourself in the shoes of the folks you're maligning and do one more search to find some credible back up. Fair enough? And I'm sorry I went off on you.

How is aspartame handled in the body? Upon digestion, aspartame breaks down into its components—the amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, and methanol—which are then absorbed into the blood. Aspartic acid and phenylalanine are building blocks of protein and are found naturally in all protein-containing foods, including meats, grains and dairy products. Methanol is also found naturally in many foods such as fruits and vegetables, and their juices. These components are used in the body in exactly the same ways as when they are also derived in much greater amounts from common foods and beverages. People with a rare hereditary disease known as phenylketonuria (PKU), which is diagnosed at birth by a special blood test, must control their phenylalanine intake from all sources, including aspartame. These tests were conducted in laboratory animals and several human subpopulations, including healthy infants, children, and adults, lactating women, persons with diabetes, and obese individuals. Studies in laboratory animals with extremely large doses of aspartame given from the prenatal period all the way to adulthood demonstrated no effects of aspartame on growth and development. Thus, aspartame can be safely incorporated as part of a healthful diet for children. However, it is important to keep in mind that children, particularly those under two years of age, need adequate calories for growth and development. Can pregnant women consume aspartame? Yes. A task force of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Nutrition concluded that aspartame is safe for both the mother and developing baby. Of course, it is important for all pregnant women to consult with their doctors regarding nutritional needs during pregnancy. Can persons with diabetes consume aspartame? Yes. The American Diabetes Association has stated that aspartame is acceptable as a sugar substitute for diabetics. Products sweetened with aspartame offer people with diabetes greater variety and flexibility in budgeting their total carbohydrate and caloric intake. People with diabetes are more likely to comply with a healthful meal plan when they are able to eat foods that they enjoy. How much aspartame may people consume? The FDA uses the concept of an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for many food additives, including aspartame. The ADI represents an intake level that if maintained each day throughout a person's lifetime would be considered safe. The ADI for aspartame was set at 50 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of body weight. To reach the ADI, an adult would need to consume about 20 cans of diet soft drink, or 42 servings of sugar-free gelatin, or 97 packets of low-calorie tabletop sweetener, a level of consumption well above typical daily dietary intake. How much aspartame are people actually consuming? The amount of aspartame that Americans consume was carefully monitored through dietary surveys. Adults with high-level intakes of aspartame consume only about 6 percent of the ADI. Because of children's small size, they consume proportionately larger amounts of all food ingredients than adults in relation to their body weight. Among children between the ages of 2 and 5, high-level intake of aspartame is only about 10 percent of the ADI. Is it safe to consume more aspartame than the ADI? Yes. Since the ADI has a built-in safety factor and represents a guideline for intake every day over a lifetime, occasional use of aspartame can be greater than the ADI without concern for safety. Tests with humans given much greater amounts of aspartame than the ADI have shown no adverse health effects. Aspartame's ADI is the sweetness equivalence of consumption of about one and a half pounds of sugar per day by an adult. This amount of sweetness would be difficult for an individual to consume during one day, let alone every day over a lifetime. Does aspartame cause adverse health effects? No. The scientific evidence is overwhelming that aspartame is not linked to adverse health effects in people. The FDA has investigated all complaints, which some consumers related to consumption of products with aspartame, and noted a gradual decrease in such reports received over time. These reports reached a peak in 1985, when many were related to negative allegations about aspartame in the media. Extensive scientific research has demonstrated no adverse health effects from aspartame. Does aspartame cause headaches? No. A controlled clinical study done at Duke University Medical Center with people who were convinced that aspartame caused their headaches demonstrated that aspartame does not cause headaches or migraines. Is aspartame safe for people with epilepsy? Yes. The Epilepsy Institute, an organization devoted to people suffering from seizure-related problems, has concluded that aspartame is not related to seizures among epileptic patients. Scientific studies in people who were convinced that aspartame caused their seizures and in children with epilepsy demonstrated no association between aspartame and seizures. Does aspartame have any effect on mood, behavior, or memory? No. A number of scientific studies performed by experts at several well-known academic centers, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard Medical School, Tufts University Medical School, and the University of Illinois, have shown that aspartame has no effects on mood, behavior, or memory. Has aspartame been found to affect children's behavior? No. Numerous studies have shown that aspartame consumption does not affect the behavior of children, including those diagnosed as “hyperactive” or with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Does aspartame cause allergic reactions? No. Studies investigating aspartame as a potential allergen have found no association between aspartame and allergic reactions. In double-blind, placebo-controlled studies with people who believed they developed allergic reactions after consuming aspartame, researchers found aspartame was no more likely than placebo to cause allergic reactions. Is there any relationship between aspartame and cancer or tumor formation? No. It is physiologically impossible for aspartame to cause cancer. Aspartame itself never enters the bloodstream; rather it is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract to small amounts of common dietary components including the amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, and methanol. We consume these same components in much greater amounts from common foods, such as milk, meat, fruits and vegetables. The body handles these components in the same way it handles them when derived from other food sources. In addition, long-term and lifetime tests in rats and mice with extremely large amounts of aspartame showed no evidence of brain tumors or any kind of cancer associated with aspartame. Is there any truth to the negative information about aspartame on the Internet or in the media? No. Allegations by a few individuals that aspartame may be associated with a myriad of ailments are not based on science and have come to be known as “urban myths.” Unfounded claims about aspartame have been rejected by independent expert organizations, such as the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, The National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., the Lupus Foundation of America, and the American Cancer Society. The safety of aspartame has been documented time and time again and is supported by over three decades of research with over 200 scientific studies. Recently, several governments and expert scientific committees including the EU Scientific Committee on Food, the French Food Safety Authority, and Health Canada, carefully evaluated the Internet allegations and found them to be false, reconfirming the safety of aspartame. The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation has favorably reviewed this material through 2006.
