Years ago I had a very bad injury to my wrist and ended up in the emergency room of a county hospital. The doctor suggested that I apply vitamin E directly on my wrist, that it would help with healing. I was convinced that the Vitamin E made a big difference. I have used it on any number of injuries ever since. I have always used the d-Alpha Tocopherol variety. Does anyone know if there is solid evidence as to which variety of E is most effective? Some people swear by the mixed Alpha variety. James

For every study you read that is pro a supplement another is published claiming there are no appreciable results for a given supplement. Me? I think natural supplements are cheap insurance. My doctor says it's expensive urine.

When I was younger I had a female friend who had money. Her passion was raising and breeding thoroughbred horses. She and her circle spent top dollar for the best foods and supplements for those horses and the results were incredible, healthy and athletic animals. I would rather err on the side of supplements myself than not use them.

E is probably the least understood of the known vitamins, but it has a cool story that typifies the leap from the lab to the minds of men. Around 50 or less years ago there was a big push in scientific research to figure out how to grow live cells in test tubes, known as "tissue culture". It was clear that reseach needed to be done on cells but the problem was that you couldn't get the cells to lie down and grow on the bottom of the petrie dishes. Lots of things were tried, but it wasn't until they added a little Vitamin E to the culture that they got the cells to lie flat. Prior to that the cells would wrinkle or prune up and float off the bottom. Ok? A teeny tiny speck of research... so what happened? Almost overnight, like the kids game of "telephone" word spread and people ASSUMED that it would prevent wrinkling of the skin. Almost overnight cosmetic manufacturers were making expensive creams to put on skin for aging, and god knows what. Then the illogical leap to "anti oxidant" was made and before you know the vitamin sellers were cashing in on the Vitamin E craze. While I do not know of each and every study out there, I DO know the majors. As of today we have no evidence for any of these benefits. Anything else you hear is anectodal. Finally, ALL of the vitamins are water soluble EXCEPT E, A, D and K. What this means is that of the others, whatever you consume will be excreted (rapidly) in the urine after processed in the kidneys. (Hence the "expensive urine" comment") On the other hand, A,D, E and K are "FAT SOLUBLE" and are stored in body fat, liver tissue, etc. If you consume too much of these they are STORED up. A and D are known to be poisonous at high doses. Vitamin K is needed for the clotting proteins and will interfere with any blood thinners you may be on. No known toxicity for Vitamin E has been discovered yet.... Ever see a case of A or D poisioning? I have. "A" causes psychosis. "D" causes suicidal depression. Not pretty. maineman

Years ago I heard that a little spray of WD40 would help loosen up stiff joints. FOR REAL! I knew a guy who wore a copper bracelet for the same "cure". Some folks put magnets in their shoes (and elsewhere) for "cures". Remember the folks who slept under pyramids to preserve them like the mummys? And put crystals on their foreheads for headaches? It's all about "harmonic convergence".
