In an editorial on "The Future of Medicine" published in the journal Science, C. Everett Koop, MD, ScD, former Surgeon General of the United States criticized the "natural health products industry" for:

keeping its distance from medical research and from clinical medical practice, focusing instead on the short-term marketing advantages derived from keeping herbal and nutritional remedies exempt from any Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review of efficacy.

Dr. Koop concluded his editorial with a much needed call for accountability to consumers:

There is a potential role for some complementary therapies and natural health products in preparing us to meet the challenges of the 21st century. But it can only be played if that industry and its proponents are prepared to meet real scientific and regulatory tests of safety and effectiveness.

I owe my life to Dr. Koop. I was born with cranial stenosis. Soft spot closed at birth. He put pins in my skull to hold it open while my brain grew. I would be way gone by now. I wonder if he put in any extra intelligence with that procedure. I sure feel stupid while trading sometimes. He is my hero.

But it can only be played if that industry and its proponents are prepared to meet real scientific and regulatory tests of safety and effectiveness.  i sincerely hope that the ones that have brought us all of our current regulations can get it right should this process ever be mandated, for natural therapies. cost, delays and availability are real issues with the system in use now and, i guess, advocated by the feds. ill be dead by the time they decide what to do. accountability is always better but at what cost and enforced by whom. how about individual accountability for a change?? <_< also consider, inspired dedicated private orgs can usually do a better job with alot less waste and red tape. at least let the same private orgs do the leading and not the following. the fed has way to much control already. just look at the mess in anything that the government fascists ;) , waste and frustration experts  , control. examples: schools, post office, fda, city hall, entitlements, hud etc etc ad infinitum. :( i would refer to anything the government touches as john stossels' "stupid in america". so, if anyone advocates that the fed touches anything it hasnt already mauled, in the name of its citizens common good, i cant support it. why dont we see if they can correct the mistakes theyve already made in most things theyve touched before we give them any authority to make more mistakes in other areas of our lives. times too short. ;) i realize that this view is overextended and against the crown but its only for the sake of ranting and is not to far from the truth to be considered :P

A drug is a drug whether you get it from an herb or perscription. If I was going to take a "natural" remedy I would at least see some empherical evidence as to what it does or doesn't do. James
