June 7, 2006Scientists have found a chemical in gardenia fruit extract that they said reverses some of the pancreatic malfunctions underlying type 2 diabetes. The researchers, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, studies mice and identified the chemical as genipin. They said the findings could some day lead to new treatments for people with diabetes. The extract has been used traditionally in Chinese medicine to treat the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
Pancreas cells from mice treated with the extract released insulin whereas those from mice genetically modified to lack UCP2 showed no change, suggesting the extract worked by blocking that protein. "When I first saw the results, I was in disbelief,"
The research appears in the current issue of Cell Metabolism.
