Vasomotor symptoms of menopause, commonly known as "hot sweats" can be very disturbing to many women. Estrogen relieves the symptoms but for over 10 years is no longer considered a safe treatment. Word of mouth led to several popular alternatives, including Black Cohosh, soy products and several herbs. Some women said that they felt better, particularly on the Cohosh. I've been suggesting it to my peri menopausal women for years. In this week's issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine (serious journal) there are the results of an excellent study. Women were given either Black Cohosh, Black Cohosh mixed with 9 other herbals (including alfalfa, boron, chaste tree, dong quai, false unicorn, licorice, oats, Siberian Ginseng.) A third group got the multi botanicals plus soy diet counseling, the fourth group got old-fashioned estrogen therapy and the next group got placebo. Results? Only the estrogen relieved symptoms. Disappointing , but an excellent study. Cohosh came from Pure World, Inc and the Multibotanicals came from ProGyena Professional Forumlations in ALbuquerque. They even had independent labs test the products for purity and accuracy. Study done by Group Health Center , University of Washington, and the Cancer Research Center, Seattle. Oh well. That's science. mm
