Jobs has effectively kicked the consumer electronics industry in the balls... and maybe himself. The consumer is going to second-guess purchasing decisions now. Why buy an Ipod, a new cell phone, camera, Crackberry or anything now. If you wait SIX WHOLE MONTHS you can have the convenience of all those things in a single device for a few bucks more?. And furthermore, you don't have to carry all those devices around, you can carry just one? Pagers are probably history, if they weren't a long time ago. Let's see how long it takes Wall Street to figure out the implications of this brave new World of digitally converged products. Less overall units, less displays, less chips, etc. etc. etc. I can't help but think of the Osborne 2, if anyone remembers how that guy impaled himself by pre-announcing the next product too soon...

But everyone will need one of the NEW products. And then, there's the new product after that! We all knew that eventually your cell phone would also be your email, computer, MP3 player, portable TV and you name it.

Dick Tracy had it first, he showed us the way. He wore it all on his wrist! We are going to figure out how to implant it into peoples brains!
In the end we retain from our studies only that which we practically apply.

Well, I was thinking about buying an IPOD, but that's out of the question now... :bear:

Actually the thing that has killed technology since 2000 is the complete and total lack of innovation. Msft had a monopoly and didn't need no stinkin innovation, maybe they didn't want it.There hasn't been a reason to buy a new computer except the need to buy one to because your old one crashed from viruses. There has been some slight changes in phones but when they were all side by side next to the new i phone during the presentation the lack difference in all of the older phones was pretty obvious.

Companies with at least some innovation like google and akami have thrived. I still think compared to this those will be considered in hindslight just slight innovations.

This is a leap frog in innovation, bigger than ipod bigger than anything we have seen in a long time.

Vaporware, where's the beef? You are missing the point completely. This product is UNAVAILABLE. All he's doing is delaying demand for himself and his competitors... You sound like an ad for Apple. Can't you see he's going to cause IPOD sales to tumble until that product gets released?

That is very st. I honestly think people have forgotton what innovation is because it has been so long since we have actually seen real innovation. Remember when the consumer electronics show was an event filled with new ideas and innovation. Now it all just seems to come from one company. I don't know why, I don't wish this to be so, it is just reality.
The harder I work, the luckier I get.

Very short term? SIX MONTHS is HALF A YEAR.. That's a material SCREWUP. He may have hurt NOK, Samsung, MOT etc. but he's smacked himself right in the IPOD.

On top of that.....What should I do with my cell phone contract that has 20 months left in it?

Actually he should've probably announced the product after the FCC approval, about the same time. Strategically, announcing so early basically gave enough time to the other firms to come up with the better competing products right after the iphone gets released in 6 months, beside killing the ipod sales. This means that the high price tag of $500 will come down rather fast too... We are turning into a fundamental analysis board!

I think vista fits vapor ware idea better. It was announced years ago and has been delayed for years and now that it is coming it seems like a big yawn.

I just think that the level of innovation here is beyond anything we are seeing I even have doubts that other companies will come up with something that compares. The touch screen technology is patented. I mean look how long it took for msft to come up with zhune, years and it seems like very old technology right now.

Oh and to add, the only other company to me that hit a home run innovation wise is nintendo. We have a wii and that thing is awesome. That product will put gaming on its ear.

I think both of these innovations are a wake up call to tech land. Lets see if the answer the call. I genuinely hope so.
