Very short term?

SIX MONTHS is HALF A YEAR..
That's a material SCREWUP.

He may have hurt NOK, Samsung, MOT etc. but he's smacked himself right in the IPOD.

I think vista fits vapor ware idea better. It was announced years ago and has been delayed for years and now that it is coming it seems like a big yawn.

I just think that the level of innovation here is beyond anything we are seeing I even have doubts that other companies will come up with something that compares. The touch screen technology is patented. I mean look how long it took for msft to come up with zhune, years and it seems like very old technology right now.

Oh and to add, the only other company to me that hit a home run innovation wise is nintendo. We have a wii and that thing is awesome. That product will put gaming on its ear.

I think both of these innovations are a wake up call to tech land. Lets see if the answer the call. I genuinely hope so.

One other thing, I really think the bigger picture for apple is to sell macs. That is where the profit margins are that is the big game they are hunting.

This device drives consumers to mac and that is what apple needs more than anything else. This device is os based. I think people might buy a mac to go with their phone. The widgets are the same the technology presumably would fit together better. That is the real untold story of this event.

I was just countering your point about it being vapor ware. I didn't mean to offend, it is just what I believe.

I have made some good calls on apple in the past and I really feel strongly about this one. I guess it shows.

Semibizz is right to point out that such a premature product announcement with the level of details provided will effectively stall demand . . . to a degree it could materially impact appl and other firms. the only thing I can figure is that even tho Jobs has a strong penchant for not leaking product information, that the market was so widely anticipating the product details that he made the choice to at least get some positive pr out of it. Otherwise, it's hard to imagine that the pre-announcement makes any sense.

It has been known about for awhile.

I think it is partially related to vista announcing soon. This has created buzz for apple and therefore mac. I don't quite understand why this is an issue, nintendo announced wii in April which was about 6 months before the release. Vista was announced years ago. This is not uncommon for other companies but is uncommon for apple.

I feel like this is the year of the pronoun. "I watched him playing with his wii, listening to his I-pod, on youtube"

"I watched him playing with his wii, listening to his I-pod, on youtube"

It isn't the me generation but the wii generation.

I don't want to hi jack the thread with the discussion of wii but I will tell ya, it is awesome. I have friends (adults with children) dropping over just to play it. Pretty funny, everyone loves it.

Vaporware, where's the beef? You are missing the point completely. This product is UNAVAILABLE. All he's doing is delaying demand for himself and his competitors... You sound like an ad for Apple. Can't you see he's going to cause IPOD sales to tumble until that product gets released?

Maybe it causes IPOD demand to drop. Some of those potential buyers just want IPOD, not the phone. On the other hand, there are some who may be about to buy phones, who will delay because they can get this phone with the other devices later. Whatever short term problem it creates for Apple, will get resolved down the road in my opinion. You lose a little now, but you pick up even more later.

iPod has few competion.....Not cell-phones.....Six month is long enough for other company to bring out a better product than what he showed us.....

My point all along was the the innovation is important enough to make 6 months not that important. This is leap frog tech that we haven't seen in a long time. We used to see it all the time in the earlier days of the PC and internet.
Other companies still have not caught up with some of apple's technology that has been around for awhile. I think the buzz will more likely drive mac sales than kill ipod sales and mac sales are more important because of the profit margins and software etc that go along with mac. If you know you are getting an os phone you will buy an os computer if it is time for a new computer rather than a vista based computer while you wait for the phone. The way this phone works with mac is is pretty cool. Pictures, video, phone book etc It will work with I tunes on your PC but I would suspect it will work better with OS as it is OS based.

Also, as others have pointed out if your phone is coming up for renewal in the next few months you may want to stall on a longer term contract if you have an eye on this device.

This technology has been in the works for over 2 years it seems as though the important piece (the touchscreen) is patent protected. That screen is amazing. I doubt there is a risk of others catching up in 6 months.

Maybe I should have started my own thread. I didn't mean to hi jack yours but I fully disagree that 6 months means anything when the innovation is this far ahead of the pack.
The harder I work, the luckier I get.
