Thanks, here are some more pictures.
james, "merle" is just a term for a coat color variation. can you guess it's weight? your texas location also adds to the chance it's a catahoula. 1 pic of the head from the side would help a bit. the pic you posted shows a head/muzzle that does not match a heeler or cattle dog.
Many, many years ago my brother picked up a stray very closely resembling this guy. He was the best dog I have ever known. A little bit timid, but extremely patient and gentle-natured. He could smile, too!

james, that pic of the side taken in front of the tree shows a body shape akin to a catahoula more than an aussie shepherd. there are blue merle australian shepherds (a dog developed in the US, not australia btw), but their body shape and ear type are different than the pup you have. they're usually born with a bob tail too. i'm also pretty sure a merle coat is a recessive gene, so odds are against it being a australian shepherd mix.
