I want return OF my money more than return ON my money

In 35 years of driving in Chicago, I recall only 1 year (1979?) when they had icy streets.
Because they had double the average snow and it stayed below 0 deg F for 20 days in a row.
It snows 40 inches in average year in Chicago. Here in Portland, 2 inches of snow brings the city to
a grinding halt and demolition derby.

The difference?

They salt the streets in Chicago in winter time!

I guess the enviro-wacko's frown on salt here or something. Instead they
spread little pebbles. No wonder the windshield replacement business is booming here.

Michigan led the nation in salt production for all but four years between 1905 and 1958 and still has sufficient salt deposits to supply the world's needs for centuries. Salt companies used two methods to extract salt. In one method water was pumped down to the salt to make artificial brine, which was pumped to the surface and evaporated. Actual underground mining of rock salt began during the early 20th century under the city of Detroit. The photograph shows one of the world's largest salt mines which was operated by the International Salt Company under the city, and is now the Detroit Salt Company

There was a time when salt prices went nuts because people thought salt would run out...

in Houston, my office actually considered going with the disaster recovery/business continuity plan because the weather forecast called for wet conditions and the possibility of ice on the roads. they encouraged us to stay home today--no rain and 35 deg+ outside :D
