Why the rush to announce iPhone?

It's easy to speculate about why Apple announced the iPhone so early, so here goes.

The iPhone resembles, at least superficially, the Prada-desogned LG KE850, which recently won the International Forum Design Product Design Award for 2007. Both phones do away with most buttons, and rely on a full-device display with on-screen buttons. LG hasn't decided yet if it will sue Apple for copying its design. It's possible Apple announced iPhone so Apple wouldn't follow the LG KE850 to the market and look like a copycat.

Maybe Jobs wanted to divert attention away from the backdating scandal. Maybe Jobs decided that Apple TV was too weak a product to carry a keynote. Maybe the motive was good old-fashioned FUD.

Whatever the reason, I think Apple's CEO made a big mistake. A June unveiling that coincided with the actual product launch would have kept customers and Wall Street expectations in line; concealed product details from competitors; given Apple TV the full spotlight when it ships; kept iPod sales robust and would have helped Apple gracefully negotiate the rights to use the name "iPhone." In short, it would have been the traditional Apple home run.

PDA phones have failed in the market place.. why? Battery life. People who want phones want loooooong standby times. They don't want to have to charge the stupid thing every day. iPhone wouldn't be the first attempt.. PDA phones have been around like 3-4 years. All of them had touch screens, etc. But they all had 1 day of battery life. Its also way too big to shove in your pocket, not functional enough to be a PC. As neat as this device is, its not going to be as stellar as many people think. And there's a host of cheap music phones coming out. Cingular offers W300i.. its $25 with a plan, it does MP3s, videos, has camera, etc. Not as fancy as iPhone, but its $25 for sakes, not $500. SonyEricsson makes some of the best phones out there. All my phones are their brand.

I am aware of the discussion, but I don't think anybody mentioned the LG's KE850 or its award winning design(!) and why Jobs had to launch the product with such a poor marketing decision. Even calling it "iphone" triggered a lawsuit, I observe that the "iphone" brand name is nowhere to be found on the product with the big letters or Apple's ownership unlike the ipod, perhaps they don't even believe they will win the lawsuit either... :o

Anyway...
