Does that mean it has to gap up above the close of the previous bar?

That's correct.

No. There does not need to be a gap. Intra day is sufficient.

The end, thank you for taking the time to explain this.

Am I to understand no gap up is required but intraday is ok but the high needs to be on the first day.

No. No gap required and the high does not have to come on the first day of the week. (when defining a weekly Key reversal). Just a new high and a close below the lowest low of the previous week. That is a rare event. Do note that that high must be a new high for the move however.

This quote is from the above link to street autority.

"CONCLUSION
Key reversal days are one of the most overrated patterns in technical analysis. Many so-called experts and authors do not even know the proper definition for this technical term, and many websites have continued to promulgate similar misinformation."

This thread is one of the most intriguing TA I have seen in many moons here. I am waiting for DCEngr to whip up the back test. Thanks everyone for contributing.

IMO key reversals are a little more valid when confirmed in multiple broad indexes.

past key reversals in the SP500

one more late night thought. most look for in increase in volume on key reversal days (or weeks) on individual equities. think of it as a mass turn around in bullish/bearish psychology backed by real money.
