Another Step Forward for Wireless Houston

City Hall could be negotiating exclusively with Earthlink on a wireless Internet plan as soon as Wednesday, when City Council could approve such talks.

Councilman Michael Berry, who chairs the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Aviation Committee, says, "It's been a rigorous, vetting process to choose a vendor, and I think we ended up with the best." Berry also said he expects the process to move forward in baby steps.

One week ago, Mayor Bill White announced Houston's plans for what would be North America's largest wireless network, and voiced his support for Earthlink to do the building. "A critical factor in choosing Earthlink is it's financial capabilities," the Mayor said.

Staffers in at least one council member's office told KTRH they were still reviewing the plan.

We live in exciting times. You know, back in 93-94, I think (don't hold me to that), I was teaching some adult ed classes on the side, and told my classes that we were on the cusp of a technological revolution that would change all of our lives. I told them that the most important thing in their computer wasn't the hard drive, it was the modem and that they'd be getting virtually any bit of information or entertainment they would want or need from this exciting new-fangled thing called the "INTERNET". Most of them thought I was a crack pot. :P A few got it, though. I remember watching it all play out and just shaking my head that the wonder and opportunity. Mark
