Reuters
NYSE imposes trading curbs as stocks fall
Thursday March 1, 10:36 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Stock Exchange said on Thursday it instituted downside trading curbs as U.S. stocks fell sharply in early trading.

The U.S. market's fall followed a sharp sell-off in equities on Tuesday. On Thursday, renewed inflation worries and a rise in the yen stirred concern that investors were being forced to unwind carry trades.

The New York Stock Exchange Composite Index (NYSE:^NYA - News), which is used to determine when to begin trading curbs, was down 159.75 points, or 1.8 percent, at 8964.79.

The trading curbs require that all program selling of S&P 500 stocks must be on an up-tick.

Official threshold for curbs to kick in is 150 NYSE points and we knew it when happened. But bubble TV didnt put the curbs flag on screen because they were chileslly scared... Do you really believe Dow quotes wasnt broadcast for 70 minutes due to a technical problem that day? Glitch my a$$

Hey xd Yours was the only post on the subject that I can remember. Virtually no interest since or anywhere I've looked. Most people (I mean non-traders) have no clue what it is, let alone that it even happened. Very low key. And so collars are to be removed if the index returns to within 90 points of the previous day's close, if I understand correctly. Now that the anticipated "return to within 90 points of the previous day's close" window has come and gone, what are the rules from here? I've had a difficult time digging up good info.

Return to within 90 points of the previous day's close resets the situation and he collar restrictions are lifted. If Dow drops back below -180, the collar activated again. BTW I believe currently %1 and %2 thresholds are used instead of 90 and 180 point thresholds.
