Brundage Mountain extends ski season into May

Idaho News Thursday, April 24, 2008

McCALL -- Near-record snowfall and low spring temperatures are creating ideal conditions at Brundage Mountain Resort. Resort officials announced today that they will be open for a third bonus weekend in May.

This is the first time Brundage Mountain has ever offered lift service in the month of May.

Brundage Mountain has received 422 inches of snowfall this season. That makes this the second snowiest winter on record.

July 2008:
Anchorage may be facing 'coldest summer ever'...

The coldest summer ever? You might be looking at it, weather folks say.
Right now the so-called summer of '08 is on pace to produce the fewest days ever recorded in which the temperature in Anchorage managed to reach 65 degrees.

In terms of "coldest summer ever," however, a better measure might be the number of days Anchorage fails to even reach 60.
There too, 2008 is a contender, having so far notched only 35 such days -- far below the summer-long average of 88.
Unless we get 10 more days of 60-degree or warmer temperatures, we're going to break the dismal 1971 record of only 46 such days, a possibility too awful to contemplate.

Chicago Chill: Decade has had fewest 90-degree days since 1930...

August 13, 2008
August is the wettest and often the muggiest month of the year. Yet, summer heat continues in short supply, continuing a trend that has dominated much of the 21st Century's opening decade. There have been only 162 days 90 degrees or warmer at Midway Airport over the period from 2000 to 2008. That's by far the fewest 90-degree temperatures in the opening nine years of any decade on record here since 1930.

This summer's highest reading to date has been just 91 degrees. That's unusual. Since 1928, only one year—2000—has failed to record a higher warm-season temperature by Aug. 13.

Turoa claims largest snow base ever
4:33PM Tuesday August 19, 2008
Skifield operators at Turoa on Mt Ruapehu are welcoming this season's record dumps of snow.
Mt Ruapehu is claiming the biggest snow base ever recorded for a New Zealand skifield with over 4.5m of snow on the ground.
Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, operator of Mt Ruapehu ski area, was celebrating what it called a major milestone today.
The snow measuring stake at Turoa previously only stood at 380cm so had to be extended to measure today's 455cm snow base.
The Whakapapa side of the mountain also had 350cm of snow, the biggest since 1995.
Mt Ruapehu marketing manager Mike Smith said the record-breaking snow base would be paradise for skiers and boarders, and with such large bases the season could potentially keep going into November.

This has to be the nicest July and August that I can remember. Normally, it's sweltering here in the Midwest around now. This year, humidity has been mild and temperatures have been mostly under 87 and often under 85 at the highs. We've been working in an unconditioned 3rd floor attic for a while now without even bothering to get a fan going. It's a real summer, but it's about as nice as I could hope for.
