A 12-YEAR-OLD girl in Scotland brought up by her parents on a strict vegan diet has been admitted to hospital with a degenerative bone condition said to have left her with the spine of an 80-year-old woman.

Doctors are under pressure to report the couple to police and social workers amid concerns that her health and welfare may have been neglected in pursuit of their dietary beliefs.

The girl, who has been fed on a strict meat and dairy-free diet from birth, is said to have a severe form of rickets and to have suffered a number of fractured bones.

The condition is caused by a lack of vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium and is found in liver, oily fish and dairy produce. Decalcification leads to the bones becoming brittle and can cause curvature of the spine.

Defenders of the status quo are always stronger than reformers seeking change,
UNTIL the status quo self-destructs from its own corruption, and the reformers are free to build on its ashes.

A case from New Zealand:

There are calls for better nutritional information for vegans, in the wake of the Moorhead manslaughter trial.
Jan and Deborah Moorhead have started five-year prison sentences for the manslaughter of their infant son.
Six-month-old Caleb Moorhead died from a vitamin B12 deficiency, caused by his mother's strict vegan diet which was free of meat, dairy products and fish.
He was being breastfed.
His parents refused to seek medical help for the problem.
Vegan Society Coordinator Sandra Murray says veganism is growing and people need to know the facts.
She would like to see a pamphlet produced about veganism, particularly aimed at pregnant women and mothers.
Ms Murray also wants health professionals to change their attitude towards people who choose a diet free of animal products.
She claims doctors are often unhelpful when vegans seek advice.
She says they tend to disapprove of veganism, making patients less likely to seek help in the future.

Maybe the Texas police will begin removing children from all homes not serving cheeseburgers. One can only hope.

A 12-YEAR-OLD girl in Scotland brought up by her parents on a strict vegan diet has been admitted to hospital with a degenerative bone condition said to have left her with the spine of an 80-year-old woman.

Court orders vegan mother to feed her son proper food.

Disagreements over the correct diet for a twelve-year-old boy became so heated for one divorced Italian couple, the father took the matter to court and won, meaning the mother must now cook him meat.

The battle over the health of the young boy began in 2006 when the mother began eating what she identifies as a ‘macrobiotic diet’ – an extremist form of veganism in which the main food is grains, to the exclusion of almost all else.

Some celebrities who are known to have tried the macrobiotic lifestyle include: Gwyneth Paltrow, Barbara Streisand, John Travolta, Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Yoko Ono and the late John Lennon, , Joe Pesci, Steven Seagal, Mike Maloney, Roland Gift, Alicia Sliverstone, Sting, Dirk Benedict and Boy George.
