Long time lurker . . . first time poster (I don't measure up to many here)
But I have a hypothetical question predicated on the hypothetical enactment of no longer allowing short sales. If one already has a position, does that position need to be covered (similar to, say, a margin call) or are existing short positions allowed to remain . . . just no new short positions can be taken.
Just curious . . . and thanks
Hello JFC.
The news reports are vague. We'll have to wait until tomorrow morning to find exactly when and how they are going to execute their rape.

You would no longer be able to short index futures.
U.F.O.
Unless they want to eliminate the entire futures market, it is not possible NOT to have selling short index futures or any futures. There cannot be a long contract unless there is also a short. If that comes to pass, I am out of this line of work.

I think the spread and the lack of stops make puts clumsy for VST trading. For swing trading I would agree. Is shorting is banned, CBOE volume will flyShorting is passe anyway. Why would you short a stock anyway? You have put options. All can be done with those. I've seen a few folks bankrupted shorting stocks like dell and stratacom back in the day. I tryed to tell them but......
A put option would have limited there loss.
Could someone explain a reason why you had to short a stock, that could not be done with options?
These wall street gangsters crush stocks till everyone says uncle, and believe me they have patience. Then and only then do they run it hard and fast.
I'm pretty sure theyjust did it big time with gold stocks. I bet they sold those down hard with company money and I bet have been scooping them up with there own personal money. I would love for there to be an investigation into this. We shall see who makes the killing down the road.
