STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.... S. T. R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics), she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital -

(at 6:00 pm Jane passed away). She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough...

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank ******* for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out today).

R *Ask the person to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

My wife's dad had a stroke this month. My wife was asked by 911 to give him the various tests described above and he failed them all. He spent a few days in St. Johns here in Tulsa which is supposed to be the best of 4 stroke centers in the state. He drove his truck over last night for dinner and seemed back to normal. Our medical system is truly amazing despite it's obvious shortcomings. His wife was discovered to have ovarian cancer in the mid 70's and she died within 3 months. His daughter was diagnosed with the same and given 5 years to live maximum. She is now going on 9 or ten years since the diagnosis and several surgeries and chemo-therapies.

I'm sorry to hear that on your wife's dad and happy to hear all is well. It's all about timing. My husband had a 99% blockage heart attack in July..and I reacted so quick that it made a difference of life and death for him. Yes, even though there are major gliches in the medical industry we can't forget those doctors who are truly amazing..we had one that made the right call and saved his life.

Regarding his wife, I know what you mean about her going on 9 yrs. I have a cousin whose husband has been terminally ill now for about 8 years with Leukemia and they keep giving him 6 months to live. They wanted Hospice to come in but she said no. Her love and positive outlook is keeping him going. She even gets him out to gambling on the casino boat they have in Illinois. A lot has to do with your attitude whether you recover or not too.

True story: My friend had a heart attack at home. His wife is an RN who has worked in a cardiac speciality hospital. She was so unnerved by her own husband's condition that she could not remember the phone number for 911! He had to call it himself. However upon reflection, I know she has a big life insurance policy on him... :o  They are both fine now, he got stints and a speed dial 911 button on the phone. She's still waiting to collect.

Yea, that can happen. In my case, July 4th...we are at our home in GA (we live in Fl). We just got selling our home in Fl in April and we were moving some stuff up to the GA home for preparation for our retirement in a couple of years. We used a Uhaul attached to our jeep. He was stressed on the move up. The next day he said he wasn't feeling good describing symptoms of a heart attack..very calmly. I quickly ask if he needed to go to the hospital. He said yes. For some reason, my instincts didnt' want me to call 911 because I heard of stories how they can get lost and we are in the woods in the mountains. So I ran to get my neighbor (because our jeep was hooked up to this Uhaul with our stuff in it) and he took us to a hospital 5 min away, then later we were transfer to another hospital 30 min away. HE had a 99% blockage and the doc said it was minutes to spare to get that stint in. The ambulance guys sort of chastised me for not calling them first because they claim they would have been doing the same thing as the hospital that was 5 min away and would have gotten to the 2nd hospital "quicker". That hospital was more of a triage hospital and that was why we had to go to a bigger hospital. On the way back the ambulance drivers gave me a ride back to the house to get my jeep. I gave him directions and he had a gps to guide him. While in the ambulance and as we were nearing our home, I was talking to my son telling him what happened. Then I noticed, "hey, you missed my stop"...he drove by it a mile away. I joked to him saying I guess I did make the right call.

And let me tell you this, trading helped because of how I react to my trades I reacted to my decision there. No kidding..ok, I'm also pyschic but that's another story. :D
