GM is looking at redesigning the Chevrolet Volt’s lithium-ion battery system in the wake of several highly publicized fires.
In June, General Motors heard about a Volt fire that happened three weeks after said vehicle was crash tested, yet it wasn’t until November that the company, or NHTSA disclosed there was a potential problem, urging both dealers and customers to drain the battery pack immediately following an accident.

I have been calling it the "Chevy Dolt" for quite some time -because it seems like a genuinely stupid idea to have an electric car that will only go 40 miles on a charge

Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen said:

the Chevy Volt will fail and that anybody who buys the car is an idiot. Not only that, de Nysschen has lumped proponents of any type of electric car into a category of “intellectual elite who want to show what enlightened souls they are.”

The thing that I notice most often with Statists is that they are able to completely overlook the failures of their efforts because their intentions were good, and apparently that's ALL that matters.
You can apply that principle to East Berlin, Detroit, Housing Projects, Solyndra, Rent Control, Price Control, War on Poverty, Public Education, Mass Transit schemes and now even Chevy Volts.

Each Chevy Volt sold thus far may have as much as $250,000 in state and federal dollars in incentives behind it – a total of $3 billion altogether, according to an analysis by James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

Hohman looked at total state and federal assistance offered for the development and production of the Chevy Volt, General Motors’ plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. His analysis included 18 government deals that included loans, rebates, grants and tax credits. The amount of government assistance does not include the fact that General Motors is currently 26 percent owned by the federal government.

GM recalls 4,873 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars in US and Canada for possible missing front brake pads -
The Sonic is made at GM's plant in Orion Township, Michigan. GM and the United Auto Workers union agreed to allow up to 40 percent of the production workers at the plant to be paid less than veteran UAW workers. The agreement was necessary to keep the Sonic from being produced outside the United States, the UAW and GM have said.

Shoe's on the other foot now, eh?
The Unions always claim to be watching out for the workers, but when the money is coming out of the Union's pocket, they bargain for lower pay or threaten to move production elsewhere, just like the "evil corporations" that they hate.

Nissan Leaf: Four Recharging Stops Needed to Go 180 Miles

As for the heavily coal-generated electricity from the Tennessee Valley Authority that powered his trip, well, let’s not go there.

Consumer Reports has painted an ugly picture of the Nissan Leaf, as did an early enthusiast based in Los Angeles.
Now comes the definitive example of the Leaf’s impracticality, a 180-mile Tennessee trek over the holidays required four lengthy stops to keep the vehicle moving.

Nissan has a $1.4 billion federal loan to retrofit a plant in Smyrna – just outside Nashville – to mass-produce the Leaf. CEO Carlos Ghosn said Nissan will produce EVs wherever government will produce the financial incentives.

And that’s what it takes in order for the “Green” energy industry swindle to survive.

Toyota recalled nearly 8 million vehicles in 2008 and 2009 for defects related to gas pedals -- including sticky pedals and floor mat obstruction -- as a result of complaints of unwanted acceleration.

NHTSA reported the likely cause: drivers pushing the gas instead of the brakes!

Ener1--a company that manufactures batteries for electric cars, and that received $118.5 million in federal stimulus money, and that Vice President Joe Biden visited last year the day after President Obama’s State of the Union Address—announced today that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
In last year’ State of the Union, delivered Jan. 25, 2011, President Obama set a national goal of having a million electric vehicles on the road in the United States by 2015—a goal that would be achieved by taking money out of the oil industry and “investing” it in new technology.
