A much loved and admired member of this board has PM me to ask if I thought she might get her Congressional stimuli refund in Gold. I asked the IRS and they said it had been considered but discarded because they were fearful we would hang the gold around our necks and never spend it. Nothing goes uncalculated in a land of fiat money. But just think what a hell of a statement it would make to everyone to refund in gold. Islander. ;)

I am astonished they would even consider gold. Sending a gift of gold to the citizenry would legitimize it. Ordained by the regime gold would catch popular attention and become a popular alternative to paper further crushing the dollar. Then again Cheney is $25 million short the dollar. Gold would also be expensive as it has actual value. Why not send pallets of free paper to the fools? Whatever gold the US held I expect to learn was "lent" to central banks and mysteriously ended up in the private hands of our oligarchs.
