I know this off topic trading, but here's the solution. The problem is that we have a mostly socialized system now, but not 100% and so its not a real "free" market either. So no one asks the price, shops around, minds the pennies. So here's the solution:
Take away all subsidies for 2 months. ALL insurance. If patients want something they have to pay. but they have to ask what its going to cost, what the alternatives are, what the evidence is for the treatment, etc.
the average patient expects a blood test, an x-ray, an EKG, a CAT scan, etc. etc. But what does it cost? Can i get over this "cold" without a blood test and a chest x-ray doc? Is there something other than a 90 dollar antibiotic? Gee, I didn't realize a CAT scan was 1000 bucks, is there something else we can do?
you start introducing that into the system and the system will correct VERY quickly.
That is very wise and very true.
Small business owners know about this. Most of us self insure for at least part of our health care.
It blows my mind how much health care folks are ready to consume at the drop of a hat. I'm not just talking about neurotic moms with kids and the old and infirm. I'm talking about relatively healthy, younger folks.
There's no price discipline.

I have close relatives who are medical doctors. They order every test, whether needed or not,
to cover their behind from potential malpractice suits.
