If the Chinese government censors Google and Google pulls out of China as a result, then BIDU increases market share at the expense of free speech.

China is a Communist state...there's no such thing as free speech, no less, freedom of choice.

Totally agree. Will you avoid buying BIDU because of it?

Generally speaking, I pay no attention to products that I buy and sell...I just follow the money.

In the case of BIDU, I would be surprised if todays positive reaction to the news holds for more than a day or two.

So, if a BIDU trade looked promising, you would support a censored Internet service in China?

Regardless of our opinions, you and I have no power here. The Government of China will do what they feel is best based on their ideology. If, however, you don't agree with their political views or business plan, you have the freedom of choice to decide otherwise. The Chinese people don't have that. They too have no power in this area. They accept what is given to them or vanish.

As a point in fact, we're traders here, not investors. Our political impact on a stock is nil. There are a lot of philosophical arguments one can make for or against "ethical investing" and I'd rather we not hash them out here. As a practical matter, though, as traders the more we make, the more money we have to make the world better off either through commerce, investment, or donating to causes. That's about the only impact we can have because we're not there long enough to be counted let alone affect change. Mark
