Our problem is a capitalist system... Our internet for any particular ISP has been increasing, but our countries internet backbone has been slow to keep up. As more traffic is put on our ISPs the backbone cannot handle the necessary traffic.... Our overall infrastructure needs to be updated... Other countries don't have the same amount of traffic so they don't see this problem... I have 30 Mbits/Sec at home, but don't see it while surfing... Best Regards, Barry

we have neglected our infrastructure for way too long

Not so much neglect as it is competition. The "unintended consequences" of the breakup of AT&T in the early 80's is that each of the baby bells refused to work as one cohesive unit both when it came to cellular and internet infrastructure. Without this competitive nature in telecommunications, whole countries/continents have been able to provide these services faster and cheaper for their peoples than the United States. It should also be duly noted that Local, State, and Federal "nose poking" have slowed the rate of infrastructure expansion as well. It's a lot of things, really, but it's getting better slowly, but surely.

yes but its the "competive" nature of free market that has enabled the "the best of bread" technologies to come to the fore front which NEVER would have happened under a state run methodology or private enterprise MONOPOLY. Foreign mkts with state run infrastructures are simply running the best of breed technologies developed in our country under a FREE MKT system

its happened for the past 100 years since the industrial revolution in everything we develop and then the world copies...my position is categorically sound

I haven't read anything this naive or misguided in ages. Ask the folks in Mexico about the benefits of having a single dominant player in telecom. High costs and unresponsive. Leadership in Japan, SK, HK comes from population density and so lower deployment costs. Probably also the need as telecom exporters to be on top of R&D and prove it domestically. Backbone capacity you are addressing above, was ENORMOUSLY overbuilt early this decade. Everyone had enough dark fiber to last them forever.

If that's the case, then why the problems?

Thanks for the post. Always interested in our race to third-world status.

Maybe this is the answer. If so, it's going to go lower or staying lower a long, long time.

backbone includes switching equipment etc just not fiber. There are multiple issues of who will invest in the upgrades of routers.. Broadband movies to TV is on the horizon, and is slated to increase internet traffic tremendously...

Broadband movies to TV is on the horizon

AT&T's Uverse is doing this right now.

There are multiple issues of who will invest in the upgrades of routers..

My point, exactly. But none of this would had happened if there hadn't been a breakup. Any upgrades right now are being done within the private sector...but it's very slow to mature because of government bureaucracy.

and is slated to increase internet traffic tremendously...

And then what happens? Internet 2? We're already running out of IP addresses, no?

Not my area of expertise, so I'll fully embrace any opinions on the subject.
