I see eventually all the reactors there will melt down. However, the longer time they delay it, the less damage.

I have heard two different news broadcasts that have mentioned that cesium has been detected. This is a fission product which means that the the containment somewhere has been breached. I don't like what I am hearing.http://news.yahoo.co...apan_earthquake

All depends on the containment shell getting compromised badly. So far there is no evidence one way or the other.
The reactor at Chernobyl had NO such shell! Result was major radiation fallout over many neighboring countries.
The reactor at Three Mile Island never got its containment shell compromised, result was minor radiation leaks
and no fatalities.

Just turned on CNN - they are talking about pulling the 50 remaining workers out of the facility. These people are heros and will probably not live long. I used to sample ground water around around a nuclear plant - they had a boron leak from their spent storage tanks - just an alpha source with heavy water - not a big deal - but my radiation badge would fill in one day and I could not go back to a nuclear facility for a year - great - I didn't have to sample again for another year. Cesium on the other hand is a gamma source and a fission product. A small speck in your lungs (<0.45 microns which is the filtering capacity of most gas masks) is a gamma source and will kill tissue fast. Not good. They need to begin to bring in air force dumping lead pellets and lots of sand - but if this melts down to the water table which has got to be only a few feet below grade - it will blow and big time - Krakatoa style. I believe the potential for a nuclear winter is possible.
Its time to pray.

Chernobyl was as bad as it gets and did not result in a nuclear winter! That said, I would not want to be within 100 miles
of the reactor site.
