Here is something most people don't realize. The spent fuel is stored on the roofs, or just underneath up high in the rafters, of the containment buildings. Yep thats right ! On the roofs. They had an earthquake, and a tsunami, and did you see the pictures of the facilities. There is no "roof" left on several of them. We are getting so primatively little information right now, its pathetic. And a crime for those nearby and not being told to really evacuate, and even ones out further than the current "Circle" of radiation "concern."
The storage of spent fuel is EXACTLY the same here in the US. You can go check out Lasalle County's nuclear station in Illinois, owned by Exelon if you want, just as an example. If you get close enough at night, you can probably see it "glowing." Every facility in the US does this now, because its deemed the "best" or most "convenient" spot, as they can't ship it to Yucca mountain or anywhere else. Yep and Its piling up big time, in the wrong places, when they run out of room on the "roofs."
But I digress:
So the fact these things are burning, and roofs are no longer there, and underneath structure imploded too, means spent fuel is likely everywhere IT SHOUDLN'T BE right now, and certainly not in pools of water, as they need to be and should be.
Check out these information clips, and the pictures at this link, and make your own judgement as to whether you are getting anywhere close to what the real problems are at these facilities right now. Most uninformed people looking at these pictures wouldn't know the diff.nor that what they are seeing is REALLY NOT GOOD !
(Everything below from here is from the link, and not my words except where I marked NB in parens).

"So someone says the fire was at the spent fuel (that would be very bad), and then someone else says...No, that fire was from an oil leak from a pump--and then points to a link---of which when you check the link, says nothing about the location of the fire, just that it was put out in 2 hours. The second link also states how they tried to add water to the #4 spent fuel pool--and failed. These spent fuel pools have 16 feet deep water over the top of the used fuel stored in them. FOR CONVENIENCE, these pools are located at the roof level of the containment buildings! (Nope they are ON the roof in many cases, if like US storage- NB) What is there was a massive earthquake and the building was cracked, and the water leaked out! What if the containment building also blew up due to hydrogen explosion.
Here is a direct download described how the used fuel is stored at Fukushima - very scary and enlightening READ IT"
