On July 9, the Icelandic authorities started evacuating villages around the volcano after the critical detection of gases – an observation flight over the glacier-topped crater also reported cracks in the ice, suggesting a large meltdown of the glacier on the south-eastern rim of the Katla crater.

It really sucks... These people will not get a break on that island...

"Green" energy does have some drawbacks.

Say what you want, but it's the geological forces like this one that keep you alive and able to write on a message board!

Besides...those who live on Iceland know the risks that it brings since it's well known that this is where the North American and Eurasian plates meet. In fact, you can actually see the two continental masses shifting and grinding with each other inch by inch on parts of the island. Iceland itself was formed by the collision of these same tectonic plates...the island itself is the hiccup between Greenland and Europe...part of an undersea mountain range.

Katla itself is "right next door" to the activity we've been following for over a year now, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that things have shifted east to provide another escape route for the built up pressure of the continuing rifting between these two plates.

It IS very cool indeed.

He lives in "Kahlifoania." Chance are very good the same or something similar will come to his neighborhood.
Wouldn't that be "cool." ;)

Actually it would be, though it's slight that it will happen anytime soon.

Living in Sacramento, we are about 50 miles away from the Cascade range with the nearest active volcano, Mt Lassen, about 75 miles away. Mt. Shasta is about 100 miles away and the range runs all the way up through Oregon and Washington and includes Mt St. Helens. On the scale of natural disasters though, I would place a volcanic eruption in the number 6 position as there are far more dangerous things that do happen much more frequently on our planet that can effect many more on many levels. Not that I'm discounting the severity of eruption, but it's important to understand that with the Earth under constant internal pressure, these "venting" episodes are necessary to help the planet maintain its structural balance. Without them, we would be sitting on a pressure cooker that could explode at any given moment, and THAT would be a problem.

Fib

especially if it only effected one person!

Wow, thanks Keith..how compassionate of you!
