This may be the "maybe earnings aren't that bad" rally. Tech is probably the most oversold area. So its probably going to bounce here. SNDK, SYNA, FFIV look interesting to me. I'm actually long some SYNA already since the other day.

I wouldn't overstay my welcome in any rally, though, as it will be probably short lived. ( not more then a few days ). IBM is going to be an exception, rather then a rule. Semi equipment shorts are on the top of my list to short into any rally. Solar is second.

This to me look like the PPT doing its thing. They are scared chitless and figured they can cook IBMs books over the weekend. All for a good cause of course. The 'surpirse"early announcement is the key here to market manipulation as intent. During the night order imbalances caused a spike down that GLOBEX does not want to honor. When you add the two together seems they are trying to save the market with lies and trade repudiations. Good luck with that. And of course the fine print wont be available until Thrursday when the earnings were due to be announced. So we really dont know what the number consists of. This should fall in the category of "breathless" announcements.

Since 1986 I have observed anytime they use IBM as a trigger it is most definitely a manipulation event, seen it a 100 times or more. This one is the most obvious ever.

I am sure IBM has many skeletons in its closet and can easily be motivated to play ball and be a team player. Just the fact that the surprise announcement was made 6 am or so on a Monday shows an urgency to it -- and someone working over the weekend to do it.

I remember reading a Forbes or Fortune story about IBM's tactic of legal blackmail on small companies. Some legal black suits would show up at a small tech company and they would inform them that they are in violation of umpteen IBM patents. For 1 million they would settle. Now irrespective of the merits of IBM's claim -- and often they were baseless -- the small company had to make a strategic decision. Litigate for years -- costing way more than 1 million in legal fees plus tie up top management's time and efforts or succumb to IBM's strong arm blackmail.

When you read the public transcripts of how Enron blatantly talked about engineering plant shutdowns in the middle of the summer to manipulate the California electric market - and squeeze em hard -- you know that stuff like this goes on in the background. ;) AS you said this one was too blatant to not to comment on.
