Speaking of brokers. I closed my account at Etrade 4th qtr of 07 when they announced their exposure to subprime. Some may remember it. Their stock dropped 60% overnight. I was annoyed when they sent me a chrome keychain and asked me to come back stating that their finances were now in order. Well. The 1099 they sent me for 2007 is missing the entire first quarter of purchases. All the sales are there but not all the purchases. Etrade doesn't sum the purchases either. I guess they think I have a PHd in ten-key. It would take me hours to add all those numbers up. I'll be talking to my tax accountant tomorrow to see what he thinks. I mean sure, I would be glad to invent a cost basis. But fortunately I keep good records in excel. J

A 1099 typically doesn't have a purchases. Certainly they are only required to report sales to the IRS.

Right you are. But providing partial info? Pathetic. And my other broker sums my purchases because they care about their customers. It makes an easy cross check with my personal records. I'm shocked with what I see in this world of electronic money. My first post here was spurred by my experience with TradeStation which I still cannot get over.

Thanks for that reply. But I tried that. The trades are missing from there as well. And the info there disagrees with the 1099 they sent me. Amazing isn't it? J

Are you saying they used to report cost basis and then stopped?

$500 capacity is a problem, if I could move some $500k, that would be a good trade... Nevertheless, I must say your short gold/long SPX pair trade should pay off now. Gold probably finished its retracement rally...

No. I'm just saying I'm extremely disappointed with them. Where my account was concerned, their record keeping is all screwed up. The fact that they don't sum cost basis when my other broker does, well that really annoys me. They do the bare minimum. But in my case they do less than that. They can't even give me a 1099 that's even close to accurate.
