Am I the stupidest person on earth?

GE, who makes atomic bombs and who knows what all else, has a GREEN commercial telling me to unplug my toaster when I'm not making toast.

Am I missing something here?
Does GE know something I don't?
Do toasters have a secret microprocessor or GPS tracking device which remains on after my toast is burned?

Should I disconnect my bath tub after showering?
Roll up my lawn at night?

How about unscrewing the refrigerator light bulb?
After all, how do we really know it goes off when the door is shut?
How about unscrewing ALL of our light bulbs?

"As for the coffeemaker with a clock in it, I plugged it into my Kill-A-Watt meter to see how much energy it uses. It uses a whopping 1 Watt of electricity when turned off. That is 9 Kilowatt hours per year. I would save a whopping 90 cents of electricity a year. But wait. I bought a coffee maker with a clock in it for a reason. I want fresh coffee brewed automatically in the morning. Unplugging it defeats it's purpose."

"I knew a woman who would never purchase a crock pot because she was scared it would catch fire while she was at work. When I asked her if she unplugged her "fridge" every morning she looked at me like I was nuts. "

It's called "standby power" and according to what I'm reading...it's real.

Did you notice this:

Standby Power
The neutrality of this article is disputed.

Obviously, many new gadgets have a standby mode which consumes electricity whenever they are plugged in.
A cell phone charger, for example remains warm even when not charging.
Computers in stand by are notorious energy wasters when not being used

A toaster however makes no sense to me.
Does an extension cord use electricity when it's plugged in but nothing is plugged into it?

How much energy will be wasted when the toaster cord finally shorts out from the constant plugging and unplugging?

Would it be OK to leave your toaster plugged in if you live in a pyramid?

Another contention is "pyramid power" is scalar resonance caused by the geometric shape of the pyramid, also related to shape energy. Any electromagnetic frequencies are converted by the direct influence of the perfect pyramid shape causing it to act as an accumulator changing them into a new harmonized form of energy or prana.

Or how about putting a crystal near the toaster?

Some crystal healers claim that each living organism has a "vibrational energy system," which includes chakras, electromagnetic fields around the body known as auras, subtle bodies and meridians. By using the appropriate crystals one can allegedly "tune" an energy system or rebalance energies, thus improving well-being due to the vibrations produced by the crystals, according to color, chemical composition, atomic structure and overall physical form.

I love this new religion.
Have faith. Don't question the priests (at GE).

Funny thing is, most folks will be watching this GREEN commercial about saving a tenth of a watt on their huge HDTV TV.

I think smart appliances are coming. The cell phone charger that shuts down the transformer once the phone is charged. The VCR that uses rechargable batteries to maintain it's internal clock and programing and shuts down the transformer unless the rechargable battery is low and needs another charge. That sort of thing. Running around unplugging appliance is insane. But it's good busywork for those who want to pretend they will save the planet. Even while China brings a new coal plant on every week or so! These people are coming on line fast sucking down VAST quantaties of energy and we are supposed to run around our homes at night plugging and unplugging everything cause we are going to save the world? There is a lot of energy to be saved if all the appliances in the nation that run transformers in down times are unplugged. but I think in the end they will mandate that the appliances themselves shut down unneed transformers so that the humans don't have to play the games. Not enough people are going to be willing to play that stupid game...so they will make the machines smarter. Some of the toaster ovens now have displays that are always on, unless you unplug them. The thing I don't think they like to admit about this whole global warming and energy saving issue is that there's not really much the individual can do. Unless I learn how to build nuclear plants to replace coal plants and invent a battery powered car I can afford then plug it into my nuclear powered outlets. As long as we have to heat and cool and drive....the big answers are up to the corporations and the government.
In the end we retain from our studies only that which we practically apply.

"GE, who makes atomic bombs and who knows what all else" This is the main point. Pretty Ironic that GE has anything to do with Earth Day, which is about saving the world, while they make Bombs that blows up the world.

Remember the old Pareto principle that suggests that the first 20% takes care of 80% of the problem? Unplugging a toaster is not in that first important 20% of energy savings. This ad is one of those "feel good" ads which does nothing except make GE look like they are pandering to the lemmings. (A much smarter and simpler GREEN AD would tell the lemmings to quit buying small plastic bottles of drinking water. They are made from oil and most wind up in landfills and have a huge carbon footprint since they are trucked all over the country. AND the plastic may have potential health risks.)

But, gosh darn it, it makes Joe and Jane think they are.
Sort of like curing cancer or ending war by putting a magnet on the back of their SUV.

For GE, it's a way to make 'em all think GE is on the planet's side while selling toasters and nuclear warhead ignitors.
Like wrapping junk food in pink paper. Or buying $4 cups of "fair trade" coffee.
