S&P 500 Direction Still Determined By 1294.26-1344.07, But Cyclical Seasonals Still Persist!
Commentary below from Mark Leibovit, TIMER DIGEST's #1 Intermediate Market Timer for the 10-year period ending in 2007 AND the #2 Intermediate Market Timer for the 10-year period ending in 2009.
--------------------------------------------
Current TIMER DIGEST Signals:
Stocks - Bull - We're ultimately head back to or through the 2007 highs - perhaps a great del higher. Short-term, the market is experiencing and may continue to experience 'seasonal' indigestion as sketched out in my Annual Forecast Model. Right now the 1294 to 1344 range is my focus. Under 1294 which is now also the 50 day moving average would likely trigger a decline into the mid 1200s. With the Plunge Protection Team on 24/7 alert this may not occur and instead the S&P 500 could be pushed higher perhaps to the high 1300s instead. For this reason, I remain overall bullish and caution short-term traders to keep tight stops or simply wait to buy the breaks.
Gold - Bull - Silver surged to new a bull market high, but other precious and base metals did not. As you know, I've been correctly targeting Silver to 36.00 and even have targets well into the 40s, though not necessarily to be fulfilled right away. Either Silver is a stand alone catchup or this divergence is warning us that a top could be forming. Of course, if Gold, Platinum, Palladium and Copper breakout here - forget the divergence scenario! Overall, I remain on my Buy signal because who the heck wants to exit a market in a confirmed bull market, in a twenty year uptrend and with significantly higher targets ahead! Traders, on the other hand have to watch their backs if the aforementioned divergence continues.
Bonds - Bearish - Long bonds are way oversold and the current sell-off in equities drove buyers into bonds seeking safety. I watching the current technical bounce to see if I can find a 'safe' short entry opportunity in ETFs.

STOCKS - ACTION ALERT -
The stock market fell on Friday as oil rallied to a new recovery high and the economic news, though generally positive, failed to excite traders after the headline number was not as good as expected. Additionally, traders were nervous ahead of the weekend, not knowing what will occur with the growing unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, so they sold stocks and shifted money into Treasuries and precious metals. The Dow declined 88.32 or 0.72% to 12169.88 and the S&P 500 fell 9.82 or 0.74% to 1321.15. The NASDAQ and Small Caps did a bit better with the NASDAQ Composite down 14.07 or 0.50% to 2784.67 and the Russell 2000 down 3.90 or 0.47% to 824.99.
Financials led the decline (XLF -1.23%) after Goldman Sachs Group and Citigroup were both downgraded to neutral by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, which said it expects weak first-quarter results from both firms. GS fell 2.12% and C declined 2.99%.
Economically sensitive also fell sharply (XLI -1.16% and XLY -0.73%).
On the other hand, Healthcare outperformed (XLV -0.14%) and managed to hit a recovery high Friday morning before falling into the red.
My recent call for consolidate and sideways trading looks pretty accurate right now. I remain on my TIMER DIGEST Buy Signal though we are currently neutral in our portfolio. Technically speaking, a consolidation pattern like the one we are in usually breaks out in the direction of the prior trend. In our case, chances our we'll break out to the upside and the bull rally will continue. The best and safest strategy would be to buy the dips rather than attempt trading the short-side except for a quick one or two day play. My Leibovit Volume Reversal 2-Day 'plug-in' soon to be available through Metastock would help you benefit from just such an event.
-------------------------------------------
DOW TRANSPORTS - ACTION ALERT -
Transportation stocks slightly underperformed Friday as rising oil prices hurts profit margins. On the technical front, the Dow Transports rallied up to its 50-day moving average on Thursday, but couldn't break through. The Transports did the same thing last Monday. The Dow Jones Transportation Average fell 50.68 or 0.99% to 5060.54.
Transports have been trading under the 50 day moving average for nine days. If you believe as I do that the Transports are a leading indicator for the stock market, then this is clearly a short-term technical negative which has to be resolved to the positive before we can talk about a confirmed uptrend in the equity markets.
--------------------------------------------
GOLD and METALS - ACTION ALERT -
Silver rallied to a new 31-year high and gold nearly recaptured its all-time record high as traders looked for safety as traders worried about inflation with the spike in oil prices and recovering economy and amid continued turmoil in Libya and elsewhere in the chaotic region (see more in the Oil section). Silver rallied 1.44 to 35.67 and set a new 31-year high of 35.71. Gold rose 17.50 to 1432.80, nearly (but not quite) at its all-time high of 1441.30. Platinum gained 16 to 1841 but palladium declined 3 to 810 and copper slipped 0.0045 to 4.4855. Platinum is trading well off its 1873 high and Palladium is trading well of its 867 high. Of course, a couple of few strong rally days could quickly change this as well.
For silver, more gains are yet to come, analysts at Deutsche Bank said. Investor demand from developed and emerging markets, plus industrial demand, have supported silver and prices could average $50 an ounce in 2012, the analysts said. "Silver dealers have indicated that smaller investors see silver as a more affordable alternative to gold as they look to alternative assets for wealth preservation, worried about the outlook for inflation and currency value," they said. The Deutsche Bank analysts said they see saw gold at $2,000 an ounce next year.

--------------------------------------------
URANIUM - ACTION ALERT
Uranium has temporarily peaked at $73.00, up $32.00 off its low. It is current trading at $67.00. Next big support is $63.00.
Ux U3O8 Prices* (Uranium)
February 28, 2010 Posting
Spot: $69.75 UP 1.00.
Uranium futures bear market low was 40.00 following the June 13, 2007 the bull market high of 154.95. Major support lies well under the market at $36.00.
The spot price of uranium quadrupled from 2004 to 2007. When it hit $138/lb, uranium became a certified bubble, which has now burst.
--------------------------------------------
BONDS - ACTION ALERT-
Treasuries rallied on Friday as traders looked for safety and following economic news whose headline figure was worse than expected. The long bond future gained 27/32 to 119 7/32.
Two-year yields fell 9 basis points to 0.68%, the most since December.
--------------------------------------------
CRUDE OIL - ACTION ALERT -
Oil rallied to a new 2 1/2 year high as the chaos in Libya increased and the nation's oil infrastructure may be severely damaged, increasing the chances of long term supply issues. Crude oil jumped 2.51 to 104.42. Crude Oil has already satisfied my upside objective of 100-105, but appears to headed higher - perhaps to 110-120. Behold the onslaught of 'hyper-inflation'.
A major oil port was ablaze in Libya Friday as clashes ripped through the crippled country after Friday prayers. Thick black smoke and flames engulfed the key oil facility at Zueitina, south of the Libyan rebel-held city of Benghazi, after it was damaged in fighting. It is not yet known if the damage was deliberate. The damage to one of Libya's prime oil plants, which could produce as many as 500,000 barrels of oil a day, came as forces loyal to Gaddafi fired tear gas at protesters in Tripoli.
In Saudi Arabia, demonstrators were demanding the release of Shiite prisoners they feel are being held unjustly.
It was also reported that security forces had opened fire on antigovernment protesters in northern Yemen Friday, killing two people.
--------------------------------------------
US DOLLAR - ACTION ALERT -
The US Dollar Index fell to a four month low for the fifth straight session Friday after the US reported mixed economic news leading traders to believe the US will hold steady on interest rates at a time when it looks like other will raise rates. Currency positions pay interest and traders will move to currencies with higher rates, all other things being equal. The US Dollar Index fell 0.083 to 76.400. It appears we're headed back to 70.00 on our way to my bigger picture target of 66.00.
The Bank of Spain said the economic recovery for the country continued in the first quarter of this year, in its monthly bulletin for February released on Friday. "The indicators referring the first few months of 2011, while still scant, point, in general, to a continuation of the path of slow recovery of activity, with characteristics similar to the end of last year," the Bank of Spain said. For consumer spending, indications have been positive at the start of the year, with consumer confidence "clearly improving" in January, and especially in February, with the average of both months sharply ahead of the fourth quarter of 2010.
The Euro rose 0.12% against the Dollar.
Mexico's central bank met widely held expectations and left the key interest rate at 4.5%. Policy makers noted a decline in local inflation at the start of this year, in part from the "favorable" performance of the exchange rate, and the dropoff of a tax hike last year. The benchmark rate has stood at 4.5% since July 2009. The bank also said the balance of risks for inflation may be hurt by uncertainty about prices for grains and other commodities, frosty weather in some Mexican states, and pressure on the exchange rate from portfolio reallocation stemming from geopolitical upheaval. Still, the bank said it expects inflation to fall within its most recent forecast.
The Peso was unchanged against the Dollar.
--------------------------------------------
ECONOMIC NEWS:
Job growth accelerated in February and the unemployment rate fell for the third straight month, the Labor Department said Friday. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 192,000 in February. This was slightly lower than the 218,000 gain expected by Wall Street economists. The unemployment rate ticked lower to 8.9% in February from 9.0% in the previous month. Economists forecast the unemployment rate to rise to 9.1%. Job growth in December and January was revised higher by 58,000 jobs. Average hourly earnings held steady at $22.87. Earnings are up 1.7% in the past year. The average workweek was unchanged at 34.2 hours.
New orders for manufactured goods grew 3.1% in January -- the largest gain since September of 2006 - as new orders for transportation equipment grew 27.3%, the Commerce Department reported Friday. Economists had expected overall new orders to rise 2%. Excluding transportation, new orders gained 0.7%. Orders for durable goods rose 3.2% in January, up from a prior estimate of 2.7%. Orders for nondurable goods rose 3.1%. In December, overall new orders for manufactured goods rose 1.4%.

CORPORATE NEWS:

Marvell Technology, whose technology allows multiple computing processes to be combined into a single chipset, said fourth-quarter adjusted earnings were 40 cents a share. Novell reported a fiscal first-quarter loss of $17.9 million, or 5 cents a share, compared with a profit of $20.2 million, or 6 cents a share, for the year-earlier period. Revenue was $190.7 million, down from $202.4 million. Adjusted income was 7 cents a share. Analysts had expected Novell to report earnings of 7 cents a share, on revenue of $198.6 million. NOVL was up 0.17%.
--------------------------------------------
POST-MARKET NEWS:
AT&T was down fractionally in late trading on Friday after the telecom giant said Chief Financial Officer Rick Lindner is retiring and will be replaced by Controller John Stephens, a 19-year company veteran.
Lattice declined 0.5% in after-hours action after R.W. Baird analyst Tristan Gerra upgraded shares of semiconductor companies including Lattice on Friday after spotting a continued rebound in order trends for chips.

Canadian TSX, TSX Venture and Canadian Dollar Commentary for our Canadian clients updated for Monday, March 7:
While the US market fell, the Canadian market got a boost from rising precious metal and oil prices. The TSX rose 38.05 or 0.27% to 14,252.77, a new recovery high touching 14,280.62 intra-day. No surprises here for me, as you know! We're holding our long TSX related ETF position.
Silver Wheaton declared its maiden dividend, while its quarterly profit beat analysts estimates, boosted by higher bullion prices. The company, which had over $428 million of cash as on 2010 end, declared a dividend of 3 cents a share, payable on March 31, to shareholders of record March 21. The company had said in November it might start issuing a small dividend in early 2011. Vancouver-based Silver Wheaton, which buys silver by-product from other miners and then resells it, reported October-December quarter earnings of $123 million, or 35 cents a share, up from $50.8 million, or 15 cents a share, last year. Analysts on average were expecting the company to earn 30 cents a share. Sales rose to $149.6 million from $90.5 million in 2009, but trailed consensus estimates of $153 million. SLW.TO jumped 2.68%.
New Gold advanced 5.2 percent to C$10.46, the highest level since May 2006. The Vancouver-based gold producer reported fourth-quarter earnings of 15 cents a share on an adjusted basis, beating the average analyst estimate by 18 percent, Bloomberg data show.
Inmet Mining Corp. (IMN) declined 7.4 percent to C$64.00, the biggest drop since June. The Toronto-based company that is developing the Cobre Panama deposit in that country, fell on concern the government of the Central American nation may repeal a law allowing some foreign investment in its mining industry.
Trinidad Drilling Ltd. (TDG) surged after its fourth-quarter profit excluding some items beat the average analyst estimate by 77 percent. The provider of services to the oil and gas industry rose 7.4 percent to $8.84, the second-biggest gain in the Canadian benchmark equity index.

THE CANADIAN DOLLAR (using the FXC Exchange Traded Fund):
The Canadian Dollar was up slightly on Friday as Canada gets a boost from rising prices on oil and metals, but traders are worried the strong Canadian currency will hit exports. FXC rose 0.02 to 102.32 and hit a new 2 1/2 year high of 102.54.
On Tuesday, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney reiterated that a strong currency poses challenges to exports. Exporters still face "considerable challenges" from a currency trading near three-year highs and "poor relative productivity," Carney and five deputies said in a statement.
Resistance is 102.54, 105.00, 110.00. Support is 95.96, 93.20, 92.50 91.82, 91.00, 89.75, 87.50 and 85.18.
