'Open Mouth Operations' By Bernanke And A Coverup Of Europe's Woes Are Temporarily Buoying The Markets

Coming this week! The Traders Expo - Bally's/Paris - Las Vegas - November 16-19. I will be giving a presentation of the Leibovit VR 'Add-on' indicator (available through Metastock) on Thursday at Ballys.
---------------------------------------------

Before there was John Kenneth Galbraith or Joe Stiglitz or Nouriel Roubini, or Simon Johnson or Niall Ferguson or Occupy Wall Street- there was one of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson giving an advance warning of 2008...some 200 years ago. An awesome foreboding it was, too.

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies," Jefferson wrote. " If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around (these banks) will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

"The issuing power of currency shall be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

STOCKS - BEAR

Though Bernanke and his predecessors were liars (especially Greenspan) and it is unknown what they are doing or not doing at any particular moment (including opening manipulating the stock market), the Fed has been apparently able to engineer a powerful rally on Wall Street since October 4th. How? By merely using "open mouth" operations, that is to say, strongly hinting to the marketplace about the possibility of unleashing of QE-3, without actually pulling the trigger. Newt Gingrich, at the GOP presidential debate on Nov 9th in Michigan, stated: "Well, first of all, I think Ben Bernanke is a large part of the problem and ought to be fired as rapidly as possible. I think the Fed ought to be audited, and we should have all the decision documents for 2008, '09 and '10 so we can understand who he bailed out, why he bailed them out, who he did not bail out and why he did not bail them out." He's got my vote. I would go further and push for the final abolishment of the Fed - some thing that is long, long overdue.

Getting back to the markets, not to say the rally could not test or slightly exceed the recent highs, for example, 1277 and 1292 in the S&P 500, but it's clear to me we are setting the stage for another washout phase. Though we are currently positioned in an inverse ETF in the S&P 500 and could get stopped out, so long as volume patterns are what they are, I remain on a SELL (BEAR) signal. Are you aware that Europe's banks are leveraged 26 to 1, whereas 9 to 1 is normal? A 4% fall in asset prices will wipe out equity. Debt to equity for corporations is 145% in Portugal, 135% in Italy; 113% in Ireland, Greece 218%, Spain 152% and 89% in the UK. In Germany it is 105% and in France 76%. EU financial problems are endemic not just in the six countries in trouble. Did you watch the video above?

I recognize that positive 'seasonality' between September and next May is a strong offsetting positive as is the 'printing-press' and next year's Presidential election, so that is why we use stops. The weekly S&P 500 SDPR (SPY) chart below (click on the link) was created using the Metastock (http://www.vrplug-in.com/) VR 'Add-On' Indicator. I am awaiting a Positive Leibovit Volume Reversal there - otherwise I feel we're still in a distributive (smart-money is selling) market phase.

http://www.tinyurl.com/6oy8ubg

As I mentioned, I am closely watching the technical action of Copper. Should Copper be able to clear its October 28 top at 3.75 on volume, I think that would go a long way in saying that an intermediate rally in the equity markets is back in gear. If it does not, it presents a clear and present warning for the intermediate market. Ideally both equity markets and Copper break out to the upside together.

Sitting here in Sedona, Arizona this weekend and looking out at the beautiful mist-covered red rocks, it is clear to what is truly important. We need family, a healthy living environment, and we need to protect ourselves from both physically and financially from what is coming down the pike. The last thing you want to do is trust government to do this for you. And, the last thing you want to do is to have all your assets in any one country, especially the U.S. I strongly urge you to do your homework here.

GOLD - BULL

My expectation is that we can see new highs in the physical metal between now and February, 2012. Despite the aggressive gold (and silver) suppression schemes underway (led by the U.S), the free market will prevail as gold moves from the West to the East with China a major player. The big question is whether gold (and silver) will be able to diverge from trading in sympathy with the equity market. Long-term, there is no question this will occur. In the interim, a rally in the Dollar, unfortunately, coincides with a decline in equities and gold at the same time. As you know, I keep harping on the issue of the 'phony' paper market. Futures traders and brokers don't want to talk about this and, most certainly, the CFTC is being derailed from putting the scoundrels in jail who are behind the aforementioned 'suppression' schemes. One reason, perhaps, is that it is our own government that supports these schemes and the CFTC will run into a wall (assuming they are honest). When fir ms such as JP Morgan Chase and HSBC are sued by knowledgeable investors suspecting foul-play, you know where there is something 'rotten in Denmark'. The 'phony' markets I am referring to are, of course, the futures market and the worldwide bullion leasing markets. How long can the US government protect the dollar's value by leasing its gold to bullion dealers who sell it, thereby holding down the gold price? These guys deal in paper not the physical metal. Roughly 1/110th of the gold and silver that trades in these markets actually exists. This is very real and no fantasy. We are now hearing that Germany is trying to locate its gold. It had always been a point of interest that before the euro's introduction, European "authorities" promoted their new currency as having a 15% gold reserve backing. Well, after a decade of massive euro inflation, if Germany can locate its gold, the euro in 2011 may might still have a 2-4% gold reserve behind it. But where are Germany's 3000 ton s of gold? No one seems to know exactly where it is.

Make sure you take delivery of your metal or have it stored in a place that you have ready access to it. Keeping some out of the country you reside is also wise. Also, pay close attention to the gold mining stocks. They are grossly undervalued relative to the metal. I am not saying you should go out this morning and load up the boat, but use corrections as an opportunity to do some fishing - but always emphasize the physical metal in your investment strategy.

BONDS - BEAR

Avoid bonds. They are paper! Avoid all debt instruments. Think physical assets. I am on a SELL signal. Run for cover. If you're trading the long side (and there will be trades), keep your finger on the exit button. I expect to see many sovereign defaults in the years ahead, including a de facto default by the U.S. perhaps coming in the form of delayed repayment or holiday.

STOCK MARKET SUMMARY:

The stock market finished a wild week with a big rally following a better than expected consumer sentiment report, on news that Italy approved new economic reforms, Greece swore in a new prime minister, and after Disney (this +5.95%) reported strong earnings. The Dow Industrials jumped 259.89 or 2.19% to 12153.68. The S&P rallied 24.16 or 1.95% to 1263.85 and the NASDAQ gained 53.60 or 2.04% to 2678.75.

We saw a move to risk within the market Friday as small caps outperformed (Russell 2000 +2.64%) while defensive sectors lagged behind (XLP +1.06%, XLU +1.43%, and XLV +1.76%). Otherwise, market action was pretty uniform with the remaining six sector rising between 1.91% and 2.52%.

Breadth was decidedly positive, but volume was extremely weak. Of course, Friday was Veterans Day with the bond market, banks, and many government offices closed. Nevertheless, all rallies recently seem to be on low volume while declines see heavy volume, regardless of the reasons why.

It was a crazy week. We saw a day where the market fell 389.24 and a day where it rose 259.89. In the end, though, most indexes finished with modest gains. For the week, the Dow rallied 170.44 or 1.42% and the S&P gained 10.62 or 0.85%, but the NASDAQ did fall 7.40 or 0.28%.

--------------------------------------------

DOW TRANSPORTS - ACTION ALERT -

Transportation stocks outperformed on Friday as traders moved to risk and this group benefits from the strong economic data and hopes for stability in Europe. The Dow Jones Transportation Average rallied 136.94 or 2.83% to 4977.98.

--------------------------------------------

GOLD and METALS - ACTION ALERT -

Precious metals rallied on Friday as the Dollar fell and traders return to speculative positions. Gold jumped 30.50 to 1788.50, silver gained 0.63 to 34.66, platinum rose 19 to 1639, palladium was up 9 to 636, and copper rallied 0.0895 to 3.4635.

Clearly, gold continues to trade as a risky asset here and less like the safe-haven investment it most often acts like. Much of this is related to issues of margin requirements. But with Italian and French interest rates down on Friday, customers should have sufficient margin so that they will not have to sell of their gold holdings.

With gold up 1.7 percent Friday and the Dollar down 1.1%, we again saw gold hold very steady. Much of the noise we see in gold prices is really movements in the Dollar rather than in gold itself. (More details in the VR Gold Letter.)
Gold is respected throughout the world for its value and rich history, which has been interwoven into cultures for thousands of years. Coins containing gold appeared around 800 B.C., and the first pure gold coins were struck during the reign of King Croesus of Lydia about 300 years later. Throughout the centuries, people have continued to hold gold for various reasons. Below are eight reasons to own gold today.

Gold should be an important part of a diversified investment portfolio because its price increases in response to events that cause the value of paper investments, such as stocks and bonds, to decline. Although the price of gold can be volatile in the short term, gold has always maintained its value over the long term. Through the years, it has served as a hedge against inflation and the erosion of major currencies, and thus is an investment well worth considering.

Mark Leibovit is currently ranked the #1 U.S. Gold Timer by TIMER DIGEST Magazine. For more details on the metals, sign up for the Leibovit VR Gold Letter atwww.vrgoldletter.com.
--------------------------------------------

URANIUM - ACTION ALERT

Spot Uranium traded at 52.25 and is slowly giving up recent gains. Uranium has swung from the June 13, 2007 high of 154.95 down to 40.00 and recently backup to 73.00 until the Japanese earthquake. Since then, we're trading between 52.00 and 62.50.

Some low-priced Uranium stocks have been showing some signs of accumulation. We traded URRE and DNN this past week, but cannot say if the current move has any legs at this time.

--------------------------------------------

BONDS - ACTION ALERT-

Treasuries fell on Friday on very light volume (cash bond market closed for Veterans Day) as money moved into the stock market and following Friday morning's good economic news. The long bond future dropped 28/32 to 140 14/32 on just a tenth of the usual volume.

--------------------------------------------

CRUDE OIL - ACTION ALERT -

Oil rallied to another new high Friday as traders moved into risky assets while good US economic data and newfound stability in Europe boosted hopes of an economic recovery. Crude oil rose 1.21 to 98.99 and hit a 3 1/2-month high of 99.20.

--------------------------------------------

US DOLLAR AND CURRENCIES- ACTION ALERT -

The US Dollar Index fell sharply on Friday as the Euro rallied after Italy's Senate passed a new economic reform bill and Greece swore in its new prime minister. The US Dollar Index declined 0.823 to 76.920.

Italy's Senate passed a new economic reform bill, paving the way for the lower house to approve the bill and for Silvio Berlusconi to step down.

Italian interest rates are falling sharply. The 2-year rate declined 0.71% to 5.69% after hitting a high of 7.48% Thursday. The 10-year rate dropped 0.44% to 6.45% after topping out at 7.48% on Wednesday.

Lucas Papademos was sworn in as Greece's new prime minister on Friday.

Greek interest rates continued to rise Friday. The 1-year rate jumped 18.0% to 249.2%, a new record high. The 2-year rate rose 0.8% to 108.9% and the 10-year rate finished unchanged at 28.45%.

In a new poll, 78 percent of Germans said they think the Euro will survive and 56 percent said that Chancellor Angela Merkel was doing a good job handling the debt crisis.

French interest rates fell Friday, a day after they rose sharply on rumors that S&P may cut the nation's bond rating. Standard & Poor's later said that France would keep its AAA-rating. France's 2-year rate declined 0.12% to 1.49% and its 10-year rate dropped 0.08% to 3.39%, but both rates rose 0.27% Thursday, so rates are still up sharply on the rumor that turned out to be false.

The Euro gained 0.99% against the Dollar.

--------------------------------------------

ECONOMIC NEWS:

Consumer sentiment rose to a five month high according to Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan. Consumer sentiment rose from 60.9 to 64.2 in November, beating forecasts of a smaller increase to 61.5. Consumer expectations increased from 51.8 to 56.2 while current conditions rose from 75.1 to 76.6. Twenty-seven percent expect unemployment to rise, down from 43 percent just three months ago.

My 1987 Stock Trader's Almanac was dedicated to THE NEW PROGNOSTICATORS.

Mark Leibovit was one of them. I evidently had insight as Timer Digest named Mark the
"Number One Market Timer for the 10-year period ending in 2007."
For the 10 years ending 2009, he was #2 intermediate Market Timer.
He is also their #1 Gold Market timer for 2011.

This book should be REQUIRED READING for any one who trades.
