Breaking news:

U.N. Climate Panel Endorses Ceiling on Global Emissions

STOCKHOLM — The world’s top climate scientists on Friday formally embraced an upper limit on greenhouse gases for the first time, establishing a target level at which humanity must stop spewing them into the atmosphere or face irreversible and potentially catastrophic climatic changes. They warned that the target is likely to be exceeded in a matter of decades unless steps are taken soon to reduce emissions.

Unveiling the latest United Nations assessment of climate science, the experts cited a litany of changes that are already under way, warned that they are likely to accelerate and expressed virtual certainty that human activity is the main cause.

“Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time,” said Thomas F. Stocker, co-chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations-sponsored group of scientists that produced the report. “In short, it threatens our planet, our only home.”

The panel, in issuing its most definitive assessment yet of the risks of human-caused warming, hoped to give impetus to international negotiations toward a new climate treaty, which have languished in recent years in a swamp of technical and political disputes. The group made clear that time is not on the planet’s side if emissions continue unchecked.

“Human influence has been detected in warming of the atmosphere and the ocean, in changes in the global water cycle, in reductions in snow and ice, in global mean sea level rise, and in changes in some climate extremes,” the report said. “It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.”

Despite the urgency of the panel’s findings, the course of future international negotiations remains unclear and heated opposition both to established climate science and to strong actions to reduce emissions is certain to continue.

I think that the latest IPCC report has truly sunk to level of hilarious incoherence. They are proclaiming increased confidence in their models as the discrepancies between their models and observations increase.

in attributing warming to man, they fail to point out that the warming has been small, and totally consistent with their being nothing to be alarmed about. It is quite amazing to see the contortions the IPCC has to go through in order to keep the international climate agenda going.

The IPCC draft report HAD included a discussion of the last 17 years and how their models were ALL wrong -- but -- in the report they released they dropped ANY discussion of the above. The draft STILL said that it was Man's (meaning the US) doing.

So what do you expect from a political body -- they are not a scientific one -- that wants global warming so they can wrench away control over the US economy. Does anyone really think that they could have any influence on what China does with China and India being the top polluters. Does anyone think that they EVEN CARE about the real polluters???

They have even said they don't want to hurt the 3rd world (including China and India) economies with demands for pollution -- or CO2 -- curbs!!!!!

That's why they concentrate on JUST CO 2 and the US.

CO2 is the least of the greenhouse gases (except for Ozone) Water vapor accounts for 95% of the effect -- CO2 3.6 percent -- with man contributing only 3.5% of that 3.6%. In case the picture is not clear, that's .0000?% of greenhouse gas (figure it out if you care to).. IOW, 96.5% of ALL CO2 is NATURAL.

But Noooooo, they still pretend this is the focus needed....BULL PUCKY

LA Times Decides It Won't Publish Letters From Climage-Change Deniers

Tired of the rants from non-scientists...

..."letters that have an untrue basis (for example, ones that say there’s no sign humans have caused climate change) do not get printed."

Letters editor Paul Thornton:

As for letters on climate change, we do get plenty from those who deny global warming. And to say they “deny” it might be an understatement: Many say climate change is a hoax, a scheme by liberals to curtail personal freedom. …

[W]hen deciding which letters should run among hundreds on such weighty matters as climate change, I must rely on the experts — in other words, those scientists with advanced degrees who undertake tedious research and rigorous peer review.

And those scientists have provided ample evidence that human activity is indeed linked to climate change. Just last month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — a body made up of the world’s top climate scientists — said it was 95% certain that we fossil-fuel-burning humans are driving global warming. The debate right now isn’t whether this evidence exists (clearly, it does) but what this evidence means for us.

I do my best to keep errors of fact off the letters page; when one does run, a correction is published. Saying “there’s no sign humans have caused climate change” is not stating an opinion, it’s asserting a factual inaccuracy.

Oh, Puh-leaseeee!

All this is just a liberal paper taking the effort to block people who disagree with their political position.

The IPCC did the same with 1000s of scientists (yes 1000's!!!) in it's last report.

So what is new?

The strongest global warming occurred several thousand years ago, ending the last ice age. That warming was strong enough to melt 4 mile thick layers of glacial ice in the mid-west. The resulting Great Lakes is the largest body of fresh water on earth. That global warming was also "man made". The cave man burned too many twigs to keep from freezing his butt off.

It's being called "the blizzard that never was" because there was no national media coverage -- not sure if that was because no one lives there or because there was no government intervention to help out those living there or because no one not living there gives a damnn about South Dakota.

The Record-Breaking Blizzard "that never was"

So more from South Dakota:

Time to have a cow about dead cows

By Nathanael Johnson

Ranchers are finding carcasses everywhere, often clustered together at a fence line, emerging from the melting snow. Nobody knows how many cattle were killed in the blizzard that hit South Dakota and Wyoming on Oct. 4; the actual number probably won’t be tallied until spring. But it could be hundreds of thousands, the Wall Street Journal reports:

South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Lucas Lentsch, citing estimates from industry groups, said as much as 5% of the state’s 3.85 million cattle may have been killed, though he said the total death count may not be known until the spring.

As cow catastrophes go, that’s a big deal. Nothing this severe has happened in recent memory. But it’s not just about money; it’s also an emotional blow for many ranchers. Dawn Wink blogged about the raw feelings evident in her parents’ communications from their ranch:

Mom texted me after the storm. “No electricity. Saving power on phone. It’s really, really bad….” She turned on her phone to call me later that day. “There are no words to describe the devastation and loss. Everywhere we look there are dead cattle. I’ve never seen so many dead cattle. Nobody can remember anything like this.” … “I can’t imagine writing about this. I’m not going to take photos. These deaths are too gruesome. Nobody wants to see this.”

This blizzard caused so much havoc because it arrived bizarrely early, the Rapid City Journal reports:

Silvia Christen, executive director of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association said cattle hadn’t yet grown their winter coats to insulate them from freezing wind and snow.

In addition, Christen said, during the cold months, ranchers tend to move their cattle to pastures that have more trees and gullies to protect them from storms. Because Friday’s storm arrived so early in the year, most ranchers were still grazing their herds on summer pasture, which tend to be more exposed and located farther away from ranch homes.

There’s been a lot of harsh weather on the prairies in the past few seasons. After two years of drought, it had been looking like this was the year that ranching families were going to recover a bit. Instead, they are wondering if they’ll even get the modest government aid that usually comes in this type of situation, according to the Rapid City Journal.

Jodie Anderson, executive director of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, said the pain for ranchers is now compounded by dysfunction within the federal government.

While the government has programs to help ranchers who suffer losses from catastrophic weather events, those programs are in limbo because Congress has failed to pass a farm bill. The legislation is normally passed every five years and controls subsidy and insurance programs for the agriculture industry.

Making things worse, because the government is currently in a partial shutdown, ranchers are unable to ask federal officials questions about how they might be reimbursed in the future.

One thing big government is good for is helping people back to their feet after hurricanes, or floods, or blizzards. It’s worth pointing out that the same people in the federal government who deny that human-driven climate change exists — or might be responsible for incidents of extreme weather — are the ones insisting that no government is better than big government.

If they really cared about pollution and global warming they would require that all new construction - especially government buildings like schools, be geo-thermal - always heating and cooling from about 55 degrees - this is not the geothermal used in Iceland where they tap into volcanos (and please tell my why Japan has not been 100% geothermal with all the active volcanos on the island). A little more expensive initially - but in the long run - requires much less electricity to run compressors that probably would need servicing every 30 years or so - BUUTTTTT - They can't tax heat from the earth.
