Wildfires and climate change                                   https://fabiusmaximu...climate-change/

How dumb do they think we are? The obvious answer: very.

Now another cycle of fakery begins, as California’s wildfires are blamed on emissions of CO2. This is straight-forward science denial. The long-term factors are all natural. Droughts are natural to California (ones much longer and more severe than anything recent). Large fires are a natural part of the ecosystem, to which the native plants are adapted. A century of fire suppression has made the West’s forest into giant tinderboxes. Population growth has pushed residential housing into areas in which they are certain to burn, eventually.

For an analysis of the short-term factors, turn to an analysis by Cliff Mass: “Was Global Warming A Significant Factor in California’s Camp Fire? The Answer is Clearly No.” He is a professor of atmospheric sciences at the U of Washington (home pageWikipedia).

Recent studies show larger fires result from a confluence of human ignitions and high winds. But it is not just random coincidence. The high winds that spread these massive fires also blow down power lines that ignite those fires.    https://wattsupwitht...k-at-wildfires/

With high deserts to the east and the ocean to the west, California’s winds shift with the seasons. Land temperatures always change faster than the ocean’s. In the summer, warmer land surfaces draw in moist sea breezes. The resulting fog moistens coastal landscapes and reduces fire danger there. Thus, any warming, whether natural or CO2driven, should increase the fog.

In the autumn, the land cools faster than the ocean causing the winds to reverse direction. The colder it gets, the stronger the winds blow from the high deserts towards the coast, peaking in December. These winds are called Santa Annas in southern California. The Wine Country fires were spread by the Diablo winds. But regardless of the name, the science is the same. Accordingly, it was November winds that fanned a spark into an inferno aimed directly at the heart of Paradise.

Wild fires in Cal. Are far LESS frequent now than 100 years ago.

As for the high destruction from the fires, they are from one thing ... people are living where they have NO business living as long as they insist on keeping concentrations of natural brush and trees in place.

TRUMP TAKES STEPS TO PREVENT CATASTROPHIC FOREST FIRES, INCLUDING MORE LOGGING  https://dailycaller....-fires-logging/

TRUMP ISSUED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER TO ALLOW FOR ACTIVE MANAGEMENT OF FOREST AND RANGELANDS, INCLUDING THINNING AND REMOVING DEBRIS FROM MILLIONS OF ACRES OF FEDERAL LANDS.

The order also calls on federal officials to streamline regulations and permitting processes to allow the harvest of at least 3.8 billion board feet from U.S. Forest Service lands and 600 million board feet from Bureau of Land Management lands.

That represents a massive increase in timber sales from federal lands. For example, loggers harvested 2.9 billion board feet from Forest Service lands in 2017, according to federal figures. But even Trump’s increased allowance for loggers is still about one-quarter of what was harvested in 1973.

Why California burns — its forests have too many trees  https://www.sfchroni...oo-13385872.php

Thomas M. Bonnicksen is professor emeritus of forest science at Texas A&M University

The reason wildfires are burning California with unprecedented ferocity this year is because our public forests are so thick. It is our fault. We don’t manage our forests, we just let them grow. That is the simple truth. However, it is easier to deny the truth and blame a warming climate instead of admitting our guilt and taking action to prevent wildfires.

So, why don’t we stop the destruction and human suffering? Mainly because politicians and government officials find it easier to justify spending money to fight wildfires than to reduce the fuel that causes them.

Unfortunately, the annual ritual of death and destruction from wildfires will continue to plague Californians in the decades ahead. We know it is unnecessary. We know that thinning our dangerously overcrowded forests will prevent it. We just lack the will to do it.

California’s Government Solely Responsible for States Forest Management and Wildfire Debacle

The inept government, political and regulatory policies of California have clearly driven the present forest management calamitous conditions with that failure leading to disastrous wildfires throughout the state.

Those government and political leaders that are responsible for this situation that has been decades in the making have tried to conceal their incompetence by making scientifically unsupported propaganda claims that “climate change” caused this situation. These government driven problems are clearly identified in two recent reports – one by Cal Fire and the other by the California Legislative Analysts Office.  https://www.lewrockw...ldfire-debacle/

Unusual Cool Temperatures over the Pacific Northwest Leads to Strong Winds and Power Outages in California

Regional utility PG&E cut power to thousands to reduce the chance of another major wildfire.

Cold temperatures potentially producing wildfires?   Ironic, perhaps, but true.

There were some MONTHLY records for low maximum temperatures.  THAT is very unusual.

So the potential for major wildfires in CA is directly associated with colder than normal temperatures extending into the Pacific Northwest and into Nevada.
