Very good thread, with many good points made. I am the oldest poster at age 80, so I am no longer as smart as I once was, but wiser than I ever was, so please listen to what I have to say.
SemiBizz - many excellent suggestions, such as stay at home, don't touch your face. Washing clothes upon returning home is safer but only necessary if your clothes touched something others did before you. Such as sitting in a train/bus/airplane. Or if someone coughed or sneezed within 6 feet of you. I can't believe they are still running public airplanes and trains and buses. Explains why NY is a hotbed. I do not expect whole country will shut down, but certain localities already are and more coming. Stock market will not shut down. It can operate pretty much electronically now.
MikeyG - I admire your optimism. Your table showing death rates is critically important. I will repeat it here because it so critical and proves that we have the medical expertise and infrastructure to treat covid-19.
Deaths per 1 million people:
Spain: 256
Italy: 254
France: 116
UK: 64
USA:26
Rogerdodger - You poor thing, your house is visited by a mail-person who has touched hundreds of infected items. I get my mail from a community box, I collect it, place it in garage for a couple of days, and wash my hands. It is mostly junk mail. I do my important buisness by internet.
Cycletimer - thanks for reminding to get my gun out of the safe deposit box real soon.
Dex - excellent point about the amateurish comparison of # of infections without any due respect to population and landmass size.
diogenes227 - A nationwide shutdown for one month would have been the most effective way to kill the virus. But there already are partial shutdowns and social distancing all over the country. CA and WA are doing the best job. And even if we shutdown for a month and got rid of virus, how long would you shutdown ALL incoming travel from other countries? Without such a ban, the infection cycle will just repeat again. That would be a bigger catastrophe. Every country in the world is not going to kill the virus in concert with US. Sweden has no lockdown!
My thoughts: The only reason this covid-19 is so contagious is because it is brand new and no one had immunity from previous exposure. It's biggest weakness is it can not jump more than 6 feet. Unless it finds a human host it dies by itself in a few hours. We can not kill the best economy in the world by shutting down after April 30th. If we do kill the economy, there will be more deaths by orders of magnitude due to armed robbers, suicides, domestic violence and general lawlessness.
Our best recourse is to practice social distancing, never ever touch your face before washing hands with soap, because virus can not easily penetrate tough skin on hands but touch your nose, mouth or eyes with contaminated hands and the virus is in your body. Our death rate is so low because of our better medical facilities, especially for under age 50 who are the mobile work force. It is very significant that 50% of people testing positive are totally asymptomatic. And now they have built immunity to covid-19. Eventually most of the population will build immunity to covid-19 and we will have a vaccine and proven medications to treat it.
