Bill Gates told the CNN Town Hall this week that every county in the US must shut down. That's based on the research his foundation has done with diseases around the world. EVERY COUNTY and there are still states that have not shut down! There are some indications this virus can be defeated in sixty days with a total shutdown but that probably means we can't begin counting the sixty days until the last of the Republican governors in the open states, as bodies begin to pile up around them, finally relent and issue stay at home orders.

Otherwise those states will be the source of the next wave - NATIONWIDE WAVE -- of the virus that could carry us into next year.

There's good news and bad on the chart below. The rest of the world has varying degrees of hopeful news, America is the bad news.

P.S. I'm calling this the "Trump Curve" since it's his leadership at the got us here. tongue.png

I call this the De Blasio/Cuomo curve since they are still running packed subways in NYC and the metro area accounts for almost half the US cases.

Please do some research.  Look at this map.  Does it really matter if anyone travels to the 4 states that have not shut down?

I'd say no.  So, did Bill say anything meaningful, no.

Did Bill spread fear, yes.

The issue will not be traveling to the states that have not shut down, it will be traveling from those states. It's like Trump said at the beginning "We have it under control, it's just one person from China."

Good to see Alabama, Georgia shut down yesterday, and I guess Oklahoma too. You'd think peer pressure if nothing else, since they don't believe in science nor care about their fellow Americans, might finally get the last states to invoke stay-at-home social-distancing orders. I guess the Georgia governor has been in a coma or something since he's said he just learned Thursday this virus was serious.. These clowns.

By the way, Gates is not alone in suggesting a nationwide shut down. I hear on the media a lot of the pee-in-the-swimming-pool analogy now. It is apt.

Speaking of fantasies, where do you get your news?

From the link:

The Coronavirus outbreak has brought much of public life in New York City to a halt, and it’s emptying its transit system. Ridership is down across the board: 60 percent on the subways, 49 percent on buses, 90 percent on Metro-North and 67 percent on Long Island Rail Road as of Tuesday. Commuters are tweeting videos of eerily vacant train cars at rush hour, and the cover of this week’s New Yorker features an illustrated Grand Central Terminal, empty except for a lone man sweeping.

I want return OF my money more than return ON my money

Very good thread, with many good points made.  I am the oldest poster at age 80, so I am no longer as smart as I once was, but wiser than I ever was, so please listen to what I have to say.

SemiBizz - many excellent suggestions, such as stay at home, don't touch your face. Washing clothes upon returning home is safer but only necessary if your clothes touched something others did before you. Such as sitting in a train/bus/airplane. Or if someone coughed or sneezed within 6 feet of you. I can't believe they are still running public airplanes and trains and buses. Explains why NY is a hotbed. I do not expect whole country will shut down, but certain localities already are and more coming. Stock market will not shut down. It can operate pretty much electronically now.

MikeyG - I admire your optimism. Your table showing death rates is critically important. I will repeat it here because it so critical and proves that we have the medical expertise and infrastructure to treat covid-19.

Deaths per 1 million people:
Spain: 256
Italy: 254
France: 116
UK: 64
USA:26

Rogerdodger - You poor thing, your house is visited by a mail-person who has touched hundreds of infected items. I get my mail from a community box, I collect it, place it in garage for a couple of days, and wash my hands. It is mostly junk mail. I do my important buisness by internet.

Cycletimer - thanks for reminding to get my gun out of the safe deposit box real soon.

Dex - excellent point about the amateurish comparison of # of infections without any due respect to population and landmass size.

diogenes227 - A nationwide shutdown for one month would have been the most effective way to kill the virus. But there already are partial shutdowns and social distancing all over the country. CA and WA are doing the best job. And even if we shutdown for a month and got rid of virus, how long would you shutdown ALL incoming travel from other countries? Without such a ban, the infection cycle will just repeat again. That would be a bigger catastrophe. Every country in the world is not going to kill the virus in concert with US. Sweden has no lockdown!

My thoughts: The only reason this covid-19 is so contagious is because it is brand new and no one had immunity from previous exposure. It's biggest weakness is it can not jump more than 6 feet. Unless it finds a human host it dies by itself in a few hours. We can not kill the best economy in the world by shutting down after April 30th. If we do kill the economy, there will be more deaths by orders of magnitude due to armed robbers, suicides, domestic violence and general lawlessness.

Our best recourse is to practice social distancing, never ever touch your face before washing hands with soap, because virus can not easily penetrate tough skin on hands but touch your nose, mouth or eyes with contaminated hands and the virus is in your body. Our death rate is so low because of our better medical facilities, especially for under age 50 who are the mobile work force. It is very significant that 50% of people testing positive are totally asymptomatic. And now they have built immunity to covid-19. Eventually most of the population will build immunity to covid-19 and we will have a vaccine and proven medications to treat it.

A young dr in NY on Bill Still.

Ventillators not working, protocols written by the office drs that dont see the patients dont know whats going on

People not dying a Pneumonia condition, is something else, or is a different disease than they thought, (or changed since the Huwan strain?)

Is another theory it is related to the red blood cells, (some doctors in NY cited 100% success large sample with plaquinil cocktail no ventillators).

Italy said 100% will go on Plaquinil any symptom cough or fever.

I cut my regular dose 50% for now.

I think they said today feds have 30M doses, 5 days 10 pills is 3M people.

More is coming and some in the system already.

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- MTA has reduced service because of the enormous drop in ridership, but at least during rush hour riders seem to be placed in unsafe, overcrowded environments on subway trains and buses.

Photos and videos posted on social media and shared with Eyewitness News on Wednesday showed standing room only on a 5 train at the Jackson Avenue Station.

"The condition shown in the video is not acceptable. We are aware that there have been sporadic reports of riders unable to maintain appropriate distancing," MTA spokesperson Tim Minton told Eyewitness News.
