I believe that a historical perspective may help you understand "Americans".
The first, regardless of race or nationality, (which would include so called Native Americans who also came from somewhere else), were explorers, and adventurers, and poor and oppressed.
Followed by the conquerors who were most often from powerful "foreign" world powers.
Those satisfied with the "Status Quo" did not venture here unless it was to conquer and pillage.
Those wanting freedom and independence fought against the forces attempting compliance.
Comply...or refuse.
Nothing new going on now.

My 100 year old granny's birthplace...Mountain Home Arkansas.
They had no money, no matches no convince stores and a poor wi-fi signal!
Paid taxes in FUR skins and started fires with a flint rock rifle shooting cotton into the fireplace.
Then granny learned to moonshine and the rest is history!
Now that's living!
