A time frame would be helpful, but isn't everything in technical analysis "mechanical"?

No, most add judgement to their analyis like discussed here.

Mechanical investing is any one of a number of ways of buying and selling stocks "automatically" or according to pre-set criteria or triggers. The primary purpose of this approach is to remove as much human emotional behavior as possible. Emotions will often negatively impact or cloud rational investment decisions.

Problem is algo or mechanical type trading never does better than people with experience I say.  I've been involved in the market since I was a teenager and prefer to look at the most basic indicators, stochastics, slow and regular and observing option premiums so I trade from there for day trading and now its been over a year since I had a loss.  Selling options is another thing!!  Have had to hold the longest I believe was 2 weeks but its been the experience of watching the tape that mostly works for me!!  Is easier to do it with more capital of course but the market has now made it so easy to trade with little money its ridiculous.  I remember my first sell on option futures with a multiplier of 250 lol!!  Those were the days, calling in trades waiting on hold for your fill while the runner went into the pit to get your fill!!  So miss those days and floor traders to be honest.  The one thing I appreciate is everyone on here so we can manually chat with each other at least!!  My only suggestion is start slow, paper trading doesn't work so don't do that and find "your" own system not someone else's, good luck!!

I have built my system for my method. I trade off two hour charts plus breadth info. Support and resistance. Sentiment not so much. Sentiment for me is a sometimes confirming set of info. For me, price is the ultimate indicator. No one has a perfect system. You do the best and always learn...as markets and conditions change.

Randy Phinney is a swing trader and my method is very similar to his, have a look see, He posts some free analysis.
