We are well advised to look at history here.

Even with the full backing of the US, Saddam Hussein was not able to beat the Iranians in 8 years.
This war can last longer than we assume, all financed by debt. Again I can only repeat, look at the rates and the private credit markets.
US was neutral. The Iranian army was ex-Shah's Army. ISIS had a field day fighting them.
During the 1980–1988 Iran-Iraq War, the United States maintained a policy of "tilt" toward Iraq, providing billions in economic aid, intelligence, and dual-use technology to prevent an Iranian victory. The US aimed to contain Iran's Islamic revolution, supporting Saddam Hussein despite knowing he used chemical weapons.
Also timeline of ISIS:
ISIS is a extremist group founded in 2004 as Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It emerged during the Iraq insurgency, focusing on establishing Sunni control and attacking Shiite Muslims. It evolved through several names, officially becoming ISIS in 2013 and declaring a caliphate in 2014 under Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Nobody had a field day back then. I know Iranis fighting in this war. They hated Khomeini but they were willing to die for their country. Tough as nails.
The stories they had about poison gas attacks are horrific. Just endless suffering for 8 long years. Nobody came out as a winner.
Most Iranis want to get rid of their current regime. I just hope the transition works out without too much suffering.
