Roger, interesting points. I am on a new hospital committe that is very exciting. We are trying to understand the reasons for obesity in our society and then hopefully come up with valid, useful information with which we can help each other. (Disclaimer to some others: every one of us on this committee volunteers our time. We are NOT paid by big pharmaceutical companies. We are doing this because we care about people and the truth). We do know that the American public has been gaining weight since the mid to late 1970s. We do not know why. There are many ideas, but none proven. More food? More money? More leisure time? Food stores open 24 hours a day? Food at gas stations? Computers? Mini Vans and Soccer moms? Trust me, the research here is absolutely fascinating and exciting. The answers are going to be complex, we know that. It is fascinating that during the time frame this has happened the QUALITY of food has improved dramatically. You can walk into any supermarket in any podunk town and buy Fresh food, Brown rice, Organic foods, Macrobiotic foods, etc. There has also been an absolute explosion in health food stores and vitamin sales, too. You may be right: it may all be about our lifestyles REGARDLESS of food, but we DO not know that, yet. I love science and statistics and can't wait to learn more. Meanwhile, I try to stick with what is known... maineman
