South Africa sets 54 temperature records

An unusually severe blast of winter weather has swept across South Africa, killing at least 17 people through exposure and highlighting the country's chronic housing shortage.
The South African Weather Service said 54 temperature records were set as snow, hail and heavy rain descended on the country. Many cities recorded record low temperatures while others hit new marks for the heaviest one-day rainfall.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - A cold snap in Argentina led to electricity and natural gas shortages this week, idling factories and taxis and causing sporadic blackouts in the capital.
Beset by the coldest May since 1962, millions of residents fired up space heaters, straining Buenos Aires' electrical grid for three nights and forcing authorities to slash power supply nationwide and briefly cut domestic natural gas provisions and exports to Chile.
Grumbling taxi drivers waited for hours in lines stretching several blocks to fill up their black-and-yellow cabs with scarce compressed natural gas. Some protested by tossing garbage into the streets during rush hour Thursday, causing traffic jams.
Julio De Vido, the nation's top energy planner. He called the cold an "extraordinary climate event unseen here in 45 years."
Pike's Peak: Record spring snow

The snowiest spring on Pike's Peak in Colorado in a decade has occurred this spring. Barr Camp recorded 231 inches of snow this winter.
