Does anyone here use the Magic Jack phone alternative? If so, is it good? Thanks, C.C. :P

Are you reading my e-mails?

I just today re-subscribed for another year @ $19.95

I use mine occasionally. Mostly when out of town and staying in a wi-fi hotel.

For those like me who can't get a local number, GOOGLE's beta GrandCentral.com will give you a free local number and some cool switching and call forwarding capabilities.

PS: Magic-Jack offers a free 30 day trial. HERE

Finally getting rid of my dial-up internet access and getting DSL (resisted for so long). Thought I'd dump AT&T local phone line because I'm not fond of them (big understatement). So, I'd end up with Earthlink DSL - to keep all old earthlink email addresses and then just use magic jack for a home line (and have my cell phone for occasional use when away from home - am also very resistent to using cell phone much ... nothing seems so urgent that I MUST be at anyone's beck and call). So, Roger .... is there a normal looking phone headset with the magic jack? And if I phone long distance to Canada, does my receiving party also have to have a majic jack? Thanks, C.C. :P

Cookie, it is a small 1"x2"x1/2" USB plug in.
You then plug any regular line phone into it.
You could even plug in a wireless system into it.
Some have complained about sound quality, but I have never noticed any problem.

I was wrong! They have upgraded to Vista and Intel Macs.
And they do have a Tulsa area code now. Area Codes

I have two magic jacks running off of one IP address at my house one for business and one for home use. I travel to Canada couple of times per month for business and take the magic jack with me. The person you are calling does not have to have a magic jack . Also have freinds in Taiwan that that have a magic jack to conduct business with the states for $20 a year. Every once in a while I will have a dropped call but otherwise it is worth the savings.... CP

How does someone call you with this system? Do you get a phone number?

Yes, you get a phone number which is chosen for you, (you can't choose it.)
Others make a normal call to that number from any phone, anywhere.
They do not need a magic jack.

BUT...your magic jack must be plugged into a USB port and your computer must be online or wi-fi connected.
You then answer your phone which is connected to the Magic-Jack rather than a wall jack.
You get a screen which pops up on your computer when someone calls, showing the caller ID number.
It also has voice mail.

Your phone is also portable, anywhere that has internet access, and you're online.

If you have a cell phone with long distance and good coverage, you probably don't need it.
But for $20 bucks a year, unlimited minutes and long-distance, it's a deal.

I believe I heard that Google's new phone will be both a cell phone but will also use wi-fi when available. Thus saving "minutes". Kinda like a hybird phone.

Roger,

I have the need to fax a couple of items monthly, do you know if a fax machine can be plugged into the magic jack to fax out?
