It's amazing that the "99%" will protest evil Big Oil or Wall Street, but continue to enslave themselves to a lifetime of student loan debt without the least thought about the greed in Big Education.

A professor friend of mine just returned from a year of teaching in China.
Like so many "elites" he admits that the "real world" is frightening to him so he seeks shelter in the University setting where he can draw a big paycheck without the risks present in the business world.

However, although making 6 figures by pontificating, he admits to sleepless nights of worry about his student loan debts.

Isn't this a little bit like slavery, or at least indentured servitude?

Student education/debt is just like the housing bubble.

Gov't pushes it, universities/teachers push it and banks make the loans.

Location in RE is important, just as the university is important in education.

But, education is the better scam.

Lousy public schools - pay R.E. Tax & private schooling - more expense/debt

Higher inflation rate than medicine and CPI, yet no one says we need to reduce the cost - just give more loans

College isn't enough - you have to go to grad school - more debt

People will send their children to college - more expense for parents & children - more debt

AND, people admire the schools and teachers - it is like loving the person who mugs you.

Girl Who Borrowed Asthma Inhaler Expelled From School...

“The lesson that I learned from this is not to help people, because helping people is just going to get yourself in trouble,” McKinney said.
McKinney father, Tim McKinney, says he doesn’t understand why his daughter’s friend was dismissed in the last semester before high school.
“You work so hard your whole life to instill good morals into your children only for the school to break them,” Tim McKinney said.

My grandson "graduated" last year after never having any homework, and spending the school day on the internet. He knows every "cheat" and trick on World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto.
No wonder Jay Leno can't find a "man on the street" (including college instructors) who can answer anything other than pop culture related questions.
It's not "too bad". It's worse than "too bad".

Head in the Sand (Springs) Schools

"The recent news that 73 percent of Oklahoma's fourth-graders are below proficient in reading, and 66 percent are below proficient in math, is but the latest in a litany of bad news on school performance. But it's news that doesn't trouble the superintendent of the Sand Springs Public Schools, a man named Lloyd Snow, who is quick to assure us that "education hasn't failed, except maybe in a few overcrowded, underfunded urban districts." In other words, it certainly hasn't failed in Sand Springs (where one of the schools just made the federal needs-improvement list).

One suspects Mr. Snow will be equally untroubled by a new index called the Global Report Card, which indicates that the math achievement of the average student in Sand Springs is at the 33rd percentile relative to an international comparison group. In other words, Sand Springs produces students with math performance worse than that of the typical student in the average developed country.

Here’s another way to look at it: If you picked up the Sand Springs school district and dropped it into Canada, the average Sand Springs student would be at the 24th percentile in math achievement. If you placed it in Singapore, the average Sand Springs student would be at the 18th percentile in math achievement.

Education hasn't failed?
In the private sector, imperviousness to reality will get you fired.
In government, it will get you nearly 15 grand a month."

My grand daughter says that all the kids have phones and tweet all day.
Next year they will have to wear uniforms.
No doubt that will solve the problem.

Bankrupt... but Buffalo, NY teachers got $5,900,000 in "free" plastic surgery last year

BUFFALO, NY (CNN) -- "As thousands of teachers face layoffs across the country, teachers in Buffalo, New York are getting lipo? Yep. And nose jobs and whatever else they want. All on the taxpayers' dime.
All the 3,400 teachers in Buffalo are eligible to get under one of their insurance plan options, they are billed nothing for any plastic surgery procedure, such as botox, liposuction, tummy tucks, and there is no deductible.
Last year, Buffalo's schools spent $5.9 million on "free" plastic surgery.
The Buffalo Board of Education is projecting a $42 million deficit in next year's school budget.
Police and firefighters in Buffalo have similar plastic surgery programs, but those departments are not dealing with the same financial problems as the economically challenged school system."...Yet.

Now they need even more money for "the children".

Teacher's "Irritated" with new law requiring that students learn!

It seems that a new law to end the so called "social promotion" of uneducated students is irritating many teachers who are more concerned these days about a student's "self-esteem" than their educational development.

And of course they want more funding if they are going to actually have to begin teaching.

Specifically, the new law ends "social promotion," which takes into account a child's social and psychological well-being, in addition to academics, before holding them back a grade.

Third-graders to be held back if not reading at grade level by 2013-14
Upon reaching third grade, these students will be among the first who are subject to a new state law mandating that third-graders be held back if they fail a specific reading test. The retention testing will begin in the 2013-14 school year.

Teachers have long known third grade is a benchmark year. Students who don't read at grade level by third grade are four times less likely to graduate by age 19, according to a recent study. If they are poor, they are 13 times less likely to graduate on time.

As one teacher said: "I don't know if this is really helping our students more than destroying a little bit of their self-esteem if they don't pass."

Many educators are irritated with perceived attempts by legislators to micromanage education, particularly when no funding is attached.

6th NYC Teacher Arrested for Groping Student --This Month...

6th NYC Teacher Arrested for Groping Student --This Month...
Feb 29, 2012
Two weeks ago, a Bronx substitute teacher was charged with forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child.
Also in February, a 49-year-old computer teacher at PS 174 in Rego Park, Queens, was arrested on allegations he sexually abused two young boys at the school.
Additionally, a teacher's aide at PS 243 in Brooklyn was arrested for allegedly abusing children, including making pornography with them, and another teacher's aide at PS 87 on the Upper West Side was arrested Feb. 10 on suspicion he sexually abused a child at the school.

But according to data from the city's Office of the Special Commissioner of Investigation, complaints about sexual misconduct in schools are on the downswing.
In 2007, students made 619 complaints about sexually questionable conduct by school employees. Last year that number was down to 561 complaints, a 9 percent decrease.

Well, that's comforting. <_< (Sarcasm)

And by the way...Here's one of the "BENEFITS" teacher unions provide:
Child Molesting Teacher Can't Be Fired Thanks to Union
"So, teacher Roland Pierre sits in a "rubber room" five days a week and does nothing and he's paid $97,101 yearly plus benefits to do so."
And the unions want MORE MONEY!

Schools which banned patriotic and holiday parades...
Now promote Eco Worship parades!

...The same schools which are failing to teach the basics of education have no parades for Washington, Lincoln, Columbus, or the evil Christmas Holiday...

No word yet on plans for an Earth Day parade, aka Vladimir Lenin's Birthday.

Dr. Seuss parade has new home
Mar 2, 2012
For several years, Central Fine Arts students have donned costumes reflecting Dr. Seuss' classic storybook characters and marched through downtown Sand Springs, around the Triangle and back to the school.
Again this year, each class “adopted” a Seuss book and dressed in costumes associated with characters in the book.
Leading the parade were members of the Charles Page High School drum line.
The parade, and other activities at other elementary schools in Sand Springs during the week of April 27 through March 2, were part of the National Education Association's “Reading Across America” program.
The program promotes reading at early grade levels and uses Theodor Seuss Geisel's birthday, March 2, 1904, as a focal point.

The Dr. Seuss Lorax Movie review:
To say that "The Lorax" is an environmentally conscious piece of filmmaking is to say that the new animated picture is faithful to the book by Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss.
One of his most beloved books is also one of his most seriously activist books.
It's a message-movie, true to Dr. Seuss' intent.

Auditor: Former Education Department officials used slush funds to pay for lavish dining, entertainment at state conferences

An investigation released Wednesday by State Auditor Gary Jones found that former State Department of Education officials apparently spent extensively from slush funds to pay for alcohol, food, entertainment and catering at state conferences and events.
Oklahoma State Department of Education officials "expended funds from an unofficial and unauthorized bank account for questionable items and purchases related to an OSDE-sponsored conference with no official oversight while also avoiding public scrutiny," the investigative report states.
The accounts were later transferred to another entity, according to the report.
"Over a period of 10 years, in excess of $2.3 million has been expended from these accounts," the report states.

No doubt it was "for the children" and now more money is needed...for the children...who run the schools.
