Independent States: The United States of America
Each state is an experimental laboratory not dictated to by a central, all-powerful federal government.
So this is refreshing, especially considering the colossal failure of the U.S. Department of Education.

Louisiana's bold bid to privatize schools...

(Reuters) - Louisiana is embarking on the nation's boldest experiment in privatizing public education, with the state preparing to shift tens of millions in tax dollars out of the public schools to pay private industry, businesses owners and church pastors to educate children.
The following year, students of any income will be eligible for mini-vouchers that they can use to pay a range of private-sector vendors for classes and apprenticeships not offered in traditional public schools. The money can go to industry trade groups, businesses, online schools and tutors, among others.
Every time a student receives a voucher of either type, his local public school will lose a chunk of state funding.

Statists hate vouchers and home-schooling too, because they both shine light on the failure of public schools.
"A study of 5,402 homeschool students from 1,657 families was released. It was entitled, "Strengths of Their Own: Home Schoolers Across America." The study demonstrated that homeschoolers, on the average, out-performed their counterparts in the public schools by 30 to 37 percentile points in all subjects. A significant finding when analyzing the data for 8th graders was the evidence that homeschoolers who are homeschooled two or more years score substantially higher than students who have been homeschooled one year or less. The new homeschoolers were scoring on the average in the 59th percentile compared to students homeschooled the last two or more years who scored between 86th and 92nd percentile.

In Strengths of Their Own, Dr. Ray found the average cost per homeschool student is $546 while the average cost per public school student is $5,325. Yet the homeschool children in this study averaged in 85th percentile while the public school students averaged in the 50th percentile on nationally standardized achievement tests."

Teacher Banned From City Schools For Over-The-Top Sex Ed Class...

Since January ten New York City teachers have been arrested on sexual misconduct charges.

L.A. teachers approve deal that reduces pay, shortens school year...
The district currently uses a 27-point system for evaluating educators, and none of the criteria in the system are directly related to student learning, according to an attorney for the families.
Of course United Teachers Los Angeles – the teachers union – opposes the concept, and wants any changes in evaluations to be subject to collective bargaining, reports the AP.
Thankfully, that’s not how things will work, should the favorable decision prevail.
District officials will be able to proceed with a new appraisal system despite the objections of the union.

3rd grader strip searched by assistant principal
An innocent 3rd grade boy was told to strip to his underwear by female administrator looking for a missing $20 bill.
She then patted him down and apologized.

If Government Collectivism always results in mediocrity, nowhere is it more obvious than in our public school system.
How was the PRIVATE Sylvan Learning Center able to raise a high school students reading ability 2 grade levels in just 72 hours after his public school said he couldn't be helped? (See Stupid in America)

Greedy Teacher's Unions, fearing loss of dues, are now going to sue successful schools!

Union threatens lawsuit over voucher program
Teachers' union sends letter to dozens of area administrations

"We can't allow our children to remain at 47th, 48th, 49th in the nation in education. We have to give them a fighting chance."

School administrator perks include upscale SUVs
A review of auto allowances and use of district-owned vehicles for Tulsa-area school administrators shows that they can be expensive, taxpayer-funded “perks” in some cases.

I wonder how many taxpaying, working moms have upscale SUVs?

And they say business owners are greedy.
But of course, "It's for the children."
If you drive an upsacle SUV, "You didn't do that." A taxpayer did.

The Luddites opposed advancement and thus broke machines, much as union contracts are now breaking cities, states and taxpayers while teacher's unions are breaking our children's future:

ILL. to spend more on pensions than education...

Meanwhile, Illinois joins New York, California and Maryland in having the highest state tax rates in the country. Illinois was dinged last year for boosting its taxes 67%.

Pension reform is a hot button issue, with government workers receiving far more than the private sector in retiree benefits, numerous studies have shown.

SCHOOL: Atlanta Teacher Helped Students Cheat Because 'They're Dumb As Hell'...
ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) – A former fifth-grade teacher implicated in a cheating scandal reportedly gave students the illegal assistance because she thought they were “dumb as hell.”
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, math teacher Shayla Smith was accused of offering students the answers to a test they were taking at the time. She had reportedly been responsible for supervising them while the tests were being completed.
Schajuan Jones, who taught a fourth-grade class across the hall from Smith’s former room, overheard her talking to another teacher about the test.
“The words were, ‘I had to give your kids, or your students, the answers because they’re dumb as hell,’” Jones was quoted as saying about the interaction between Smith and the unidentified third teacher.
A former student also allegedly accused Smith of cheating, adding that the educator offered the girl, now in eighth grade, the answers to a math test in 2010.
The tribunal deliberated for just one hour before handing down a guilty verdict. Smith had been charged with willful neglect and immorality, and she subsequently lost her job.
Smith’s case was part of a larger investigation that implicated approximately 180 public school teachers in the city, sparked by investigations performed by the newspaper.
All tests proctored by Smith were allegedly marked with suspicious erasure marks, amounting to what was termed a “practically impossible frequency of changes from wrong to right [answers].”
