Bill Maher: "The Amazon is burning up"

Is the Amazon rainforest burning up?

The scary headlines hinge on two pieces of propaganda:

1) These wildfires are not normal events.

2) The rainforest is being destroyed.

In fact, as Science 2.0 explain, most of these fires are controlled grassland fires, deliberately set off to destroy shrub. This is a common and necessary process to manage farmland, which may have been originally created by deforestation decades ago.

French President Macron tweets a stock photo from years ago:

Emmanuel Macron

Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain forest - the lungs which produces 20% of our planet’s oxygen - is on fire. It is an international crisis. Members of the G7 Summit, let's discuss this emergency first order in two days! #ActForTheAmazon

The tweet commenters quickly corrected Macron as to the photo's origin,

helpfully supplied valid links  to sources indicating the fires in the Amazon were about average

and anyway, why isn't Macron doing something about fire ravaged Notre Dame and the crime in Paris and the rest of France because of all those ungrateful, Non-French-speaking migrants,

The claim that the Amazon rainforest is burning on an unprecedented scale and that these fires will rob humanity of one of its key sources of oxygen is fake news

It is hard to think of any other global event this year that has been as awash with misinformation as the rainforest fires.

The idea that what is currently happening in the Amazon is shockingly unusual or apocalyptic or proof of man’s disdain for his environment is an entirely politicized interpretation of a perfectly normal event.

The claim that the Amazon rainforest is the ‘lungs of the world’, producing 20 per cent of the Earth’s oxygen, is also bunkum.    https://www.spiked-o...yth-of-ecocide/

The Amazon burns every year and everyone ignores it ...

until Brazil gets a right-wing president and everyone loses their mind.

This is just one more example of the media controlling the narrative and selectively and hypocritically placing blame on a particular (and almost always right-leaning) political party.    http://www.drroyspen...mazonian-fires/

The Amazon rainforest does NOT produce 20 per cent of the world’s oxygen

Nadine Unger, Assistant Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at Yale:

The Amazon rain forest is often perceived as the lungs of the planet.

In fact, almost all the oxygen the Amazon produces during the day remains there and is reabsorbed by the forest at night.

the Amazon rain forest is a closed system that uses all its own oxygen and carbon dioxide.
